Almost a vegan here, but some whey and some fish. For almost 40 years.

Reading recently about the protein requirements to build muscle (perhaps as high as 1 gram/pound body weight according to some) and the real risk of muscle loss when in calorie deficient, I decided that getting enough protein to accomplish my goals (which include weight loss and muscle gain at different times) would be VERY difficult for me as a full vegan.)

I encourage you to read up on protein requirements and make an informed decision. Definitely count calories, but count protein too.

I found this link compelling, but I’m not an expert and, who knows?, maybe the author isn’t either: https://examine.com/nutrition/how-much-protein-do-i-need/

The reason I’m posting here is that I suspect my average athletic (swim, bike, hike) performance for the past literally decades may have been largely because I wasn’t getting enough protein. :-(

I’m not dissing a vegan diet here. I’m just cautioning you to be sure you get enough protein.

    Good luck.

If you are eating enough calories to sustain your activity level, you’re most likely getting enough protein.

What is your source for this assertion?
