A place opened up selling hand made brownies. I was so excited! I have a crazy sweet tooth. Planned my weekly calories around trying them. Got them today and they are....Ok.
I am sad I wasted calories on them. I have become really fussy about what I spend calories on and will gladly pay a premium for quality.
Ah well...moving on....

I hate it when that happens! Sometimes the food is perfectly good, but they're such calorie bombs that I expect the world out of them.10

I feel you. I feel about wasting my calories about the same as I feel about wasting my money.
This past Friday, I had banked my calories for two sausage, peppers, and onions with marinara sauce on rolls. Decided last minute to go with turkey sausage. Such a disappointment. The turkey sausage was bland and tasted like someone had hand mixed the sausage meat after applying floral hand lotion.
I should have just burned the calories for the real Italian sausages.13 -
aw, I totally get it.
Every time I go to my local ASDA Walmart, their sweet bakery section has me "giving them the thrice over", only to be "giving them the cab fare in the morning" if y'know what I mean.. those goods look the part fo sho, but do not deliver right to your door (brain), mhmm. I've sadly just learnt to walk on by knowing what they're all about.1 -
Most baked sweets are not worth it to me. The average baked dessert is way too sweet for my liking and with too many calories. I prefer light and fluffy stuff like mousse or tiramisu but those are calorie bombs too so I eat them rarely.0

That really sucks. It happened to me with a cinnamon bun. I was very disappointed in it.4

A pasta dish did that to me once. I used to love eating it, so I decided to splurge on night when we were out. It was ok, but not nearly as yummy as I remembered. Completely not worth the crazy calories for it. Should have gone with my new favorite that was half the calories and a mixed drink instead.4

I splurged on a piece of key lime pie last night. Key lime pie is one of the only "sweet" treats I really like. The problem with key lime pie, like many pastries, is that you can get a really "meh" one. But this one last night was worth every single, decadent, worthless, empty calorie. It tasted like heaven. I have no regrets....29

I went to this pasta place yesterday, and remembered they have great mushroom pasta, so I decided to go with that one instead of trying something new. The mushroom pasta was... fine. Then, we saw rhubarb sherbet on the dessert menu, and decided we have to try it. That, also, was... fine. Neither was excellent. The only truly excellent part about my pre-planned splurge was the movie theater popcorn combined with Ocean's 8. I'm a little annoyed about the pasta and sherbet, but at least I still had fun.6

I am so glad its not just me that suffers from this .. Cakes, crisps, sweets I save up for them .. go on a splurge and am just left feeling empty afterwards as they are nothing like I remember them.
Anyone got a theory to why this happens .... is it just a case of building up expectation ... or has something changed physically and a bunch of sugar stuck together with fat just doesnt appeal. .. OR does your body just like what it gets most of and if your diet is now more Greek yogurt than Pastries then the Greek yog tastes nicer ?5 -
My problem with this is that having given in to one high calorie treat, if it turns out not as good as I expected I tend to feel I deserve something that does meet my expectations. Guess what? I rationalize myself into a 'diet break' and go for another treat trying to find that magic!11

I went out for dinner last night and like you I planned my calories around it and yeah... It was only ok... I could have prepared something similar at home myself with fewer calories, better macros and more flavour!!3 -

I hear you. I am super picky about what I waste my calories for. This past weekend was suppper hot and a few occasions i was offered ice cream. The funny part is one situation (after run club) they even commented how I said I run to eat ice cream :P I do but I am picky on what ice cream I eat, not just any "ice cream treat" :P
On the plus side, sometimes I am so picky on choosing the right reward, I put it off! NONE of the options seems perfect enough so...why bother. I often make my own (which can be tricky as I need to dump the surplus at work or with friends ASAP).
At the end of my 10k run training I plan to pick up the worse Dairy Queen treat as a reward (I haven't had any and that will likely be my only real ice cream splurge of the summer). It's annoying as I walk by the DQ 6x a week going to and from the run club! My preferred ice cream is the worse - the one with like brownies and nuts in it. no "fitting" that in a 1300 calorie day (unless I eat ONLY that)
in the meantime I fit in low cal ice cream and a cold treat using just fruit (yonanas)3 -

Went to the ice cream kiosk that used to sell amazing scooped ice cream along side the Mr whippy stuff
Family all wanted Mr whippy but I decided to splurge on 2 scoops of the good stuff. Cost more than double Thiers. White chocolate tasted like plastic and Panna cotta tasted like *kitten*
In the trash it went7 -
Why would anyone eat more than a bite or two of something they didn't feel was worth the calories? It is my primary food restriction. I will grant you it can be a PITA at times. I once threw away some fried chicken and ended up getting tuna out of the cupboard because of it but I will not waste my calories. The more expensive something is the more it needs to satisfy. I think I am up to 8 different instances of things in my 6 months that I have refused to eat.
I think back to all the times I ate calorie bombs while gaining weight that I didn't fully enjoy that I now have to work back off and it annoys me greatly. Cold, overcooked, odd flavor, disappointing flavor... sent back or trashed.13 -
Not just disappointing but I've found my taste buds have changed. There was a lovely lemon cheesecake I used to really enjoy, but due to higher calories I hadn't worked it into my calorie allowance.
Then at Christmas, I thought that this would be an ideal time to indulge. To have something I really love but can't have usually. So I sat down to enjoy my slice of cheese cake, full of anticipation, but it now tasted terrible. Far to sweet and the sugar gave it a gritty taste.
I didn't have more than a couple of bites. As I agree that its not worth wasting calories on food I don't enjoy.6 -

I think we adapt to the food we eat and what we drink. I have heard people my entire life that gave up sugary sodas that have said that later when they tried one again it was cloyingly sweet. I experienced this myself when I was in my 20's and gave up sweetened tea. I think the same is true for spicy foods and different types of meat. If you eat spicy long enough I think it becomes normal and you don't get the same fire mouth you would if you tried something spicy with a diet of mostly bland foods.
It makes sense of you think of different cultures and cuisines. If you were raised eating insects (which are not as bad as they sound) it would be normal and you might even crave them at times.2 -

Most desserts are super disappointing and not worth the calories. Always a disappointment... but it's because I have very high standards too, lol.
I don't believe in the 'adapting to the things we eat' theory one bit though. It's just that because, I didn't care about wasted calories. Now I do. So saving calories and end up disappointed is a huge bummer... before I'd just eat the thing and move on to something else...6 -
Uurgh, it's so annoying when that happens! I think I need to make myself a "worth it" list of the treats that actually are worth splurging on. I'm yet to find a "worth it" donut and yet I keep having them and asking myself "why?" afterwards!4

Oh gosh yes, I to never be able to eat spicy food, now I love them! I used to have sugar in my tea, now, bleh, I wouldn't even drink a cup made with sugar, it tastes too awful.
And when I changed jobs, the new coffee machine makes terrible coffee, but I've got used to it now, and it doesn't taste too bad anymore (it's not the best, but it's no longer unpleasant to drink)0 -

I agree with this - in fact one of the things that led me to initial success was learning in Anatomy and Physiology how quickly our taste and smell senses adapt - nothing will taste as good as it does the first bite. So if that first bite isn't everything I want it to be, I give it to one of my kids and find something else.2 -

I hardly ever eat icecream because the quality is so poor. Wales has some wonderful artisan ice cream though, with good taste and very heavy, good milk but I don't live there anymore. Scotland? Hmm.. Mackies is ok, but lacks the good milky flavour. I give it a miss.2 -

We have a local farm in Sheffield who uses Thier milk to make wonderful ice cream, now I don't want to go in case it's not as good as I remember1 -

I loved Ocean's 8, but my popcorn splurge was a disappointment. My local theater has dairy in the seasoning they use so I just had plain, unsalted popcorn. Next time I think I'll just sneak in some pretzels or bring my own salt.0 -

I hate it when that happens!!! I love a good brownie too! My niece actually makes GREAT brownies. I remember the first time I lost 140 pounds, one of the things I realized I used to LOVE (I don’t know why) were Burger King Whopper’s with Cheese only ketchup. After I had lost the weight that time (in 2013), I had one, and it wasn’t NEARLY as good as I thought it was going to be. Happened with the Quarter Pounder with Cheese too. Not that I should be having those anyway - but that STUNK!!!2

when i started as a pastry chef 12 years ago - it was still a pretty niche occupation. i have a savory tooth and not a sweet one. *mercy lol* i do believe in an adage that i've read that you will eat something 8 times before you get used to it and it becomes monotonous. our tastebuds change and we evolve. would i get into this occupation again? never.0
