Exercise for reward is not optimal. Try to run because it is enjoyable.47

I run for lots of reasons...
1. Food
2. Mental health/anxiety/depression/stress relief
3. Food
4. I like it
5. Food
6. Only Time in my life that I can justify neon attire due to need to be visible to traffic
7. Food
8. Excessive shoe collection is considered standard equipment
9. Did I say food already?48 -
I run because it feels good to have accomplished a run, and because I can have more chocolate on running days. Who cares if a random person on the internet thinks that’s “optimal” or not? I reached my goal weight, have been maintaining for a year, and am happy with both my physical fitness and chocolate consumption. That sounds pretty darn optimal to me.34

Oh, yeah, sometimes I run so I can eat more ice cream. I'm flexible like that.

My therapist says I'm trying to outrun grief. I think that's a valid point. But also I run because for a very long time I thought that I couldn't. It might not look like anyone else's running, or running at all. I'll probably never place in the top for my age group, or have "good" pace times, but I don't care about that. It's mine. And it's awesome.54

I wish I could still run (knees). I enjoyed it. SUP paddling and walking sort of takes its place now. I really like paddling but it takes more planning and time. The added benefit of eating more was a big plus. I used to run 6+ miles 3 or 4 times a week and did one half marathon. Now I am paddling close to 10 miles at a time a couple of times a week and walking 6 or 8 miles on some of the other days.6

Oh my god, I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Not the grief part (hugs to you for your troubles) but all the other stuff.10 -

This is pretty much me. I'm not "optimal" and not ashamed of it.
ETA: I have ONE pair (that I never wear) that isn't sports shoes, so the last one made me laugh.6 -

Does this mean I’m not the only person who sometimes has imaginary conversations with my middle school gym class bullies while I’m running, in which I gloat about how much fitter I am now than they are?
Please tell me that’s not just me.18 -
I run because it makes me feel good and I like running past walkers7

I love this answer. Hell yes. Good for you! ^^
I run because I like being able to put on my headphones and drown out the world for a bit, and take in some scenery at the same time.11 -

Perhaps you need to do it more2 -
I can't run because of an orthopedic injury, and that makes me very happy. I hate running. Even if I could run, I would prefer to walk for exercise. I'd probably walk, even if it didn't burn calories, but you can be sure of the fact that there are days I only walk so I can have a cookie.
As for running, it's like anything else. For everyone who hates it, there are plenty who love it, I love sewing, but most people I know just nod politely as I ramble about sewing and roll their eyes when they turn away. Or they're internally rolling their eyes as I'm speaking. So, y'all have fun on your run and enjoy that beer you earned!7 -

I'm not judging. Every pinned Getting Started thread suggests doing exercise you enjoy. The OP is clearly not running because they enjoy it.
Its no different than careers. Imagine two people in the same job. One goes to work everyday hates it and is just there to collect a paycheck on Friday. The other person enjoys their job and finds it rewarding. The paycheck is a bonus that allows them to live their life more fully. Which situation is more optimal for long term career progression, fulfillment, happiness, etc?
I'm simply suggesting the OP try to find joy in running and not do it simply so they can drink an extra beer. If they can't find joy in it they would probably have long term success pursuing another form of exercise.
