Mexican restaurant - please help!

I need help. I have my class reunion today and I don’t want to blow my eating plan. Would fajitas (corn tortillas) be better than an order of 3 street tacos (corn tortillas, no cheese, just onions and cilantro and salsa)?
Or is there a better option? I would be going with chicken or shrimp on both of those.

Hi Jessie, I would recommend that you plug the ingredient foods into your diary to discover content. You can always remove/erase them as you research. I do this all the time. For example, enter: 2 oz fajita chicken, 2 (count)6" flour tortilla, 2 oz pico de gallo (Mexican salsa that has tomatoes, cilantro, onions, garlic, peppers and lime juice). That would be two small chicken fajitas without cheese. It does take work to research, but it will open your eyes for calorie and nutrient content. What I just listed is what I would order, eating only 2 small fajitas (without cheese and without guacamole).1 -
Each tortilla is 100 calories. Order the chicken fajitas, and eat the meat and veg only. Leave the tortillas. When you log it, log a few grams of oil in addition to the food. The real temptation is going to be the bowl of chips and salsa they give you to snack on while waiting for your entree. If you plan to dance the night away, eat the tortillas. Enjoy.2

I don't know how big the portions are at the restaurant you are going to, but generally the street tacos would be less volume than fajitas, so probably less calories. There may be more oil involved in the cooking of the fajitas as well. But, get whichever sounds better to you, and eat a little less for the rest of the day to make the calories fit.0

I just realized that you asked about fajitas vs tacos. Fajita meats and veggies are usually sautéed in oil before being presented with the wrapping of choice (flour tortillas, corn tortillas). Tacos usually are a little less fat as the meats are often served separate from RAW veggies (so less oil), and served in the wrapping of choice. Just remember that you don't want a hard shelled taco (or edible salad bowl) as that shell is usually fried. Soft shell is the way to go for less fat. Corn tortillas and flour tortillas are personal preference and you have to research calorie content based on the size of the tortilla. I usually allow up to one 12" tortilla (burrito sized) or 2 - 6" for one meal.1 -

That’s why I had considered the street tacos because they are generally smaller.
I have never been to this restaurant, so was looking at the menu online.

The last time I ordered fajitas, they were swimming in oil I'd go with the street tacos, and most importantly - enjoy your day!0

Fajitas are generally grilled meat, street tacos may or may not be fried meat. Fajitas are generally the better option ounce for ounce. Be careful though, fajitas are generally larger in portion than tacos. Just make sure to request grilled tortillas, many restaurants lightly fry the tortillas to soften them.0

Fajita meat is grilled, always. I live 5 minutes from the US/Mexico boarder and greasy/oily fajitas are NOT something any Mexican or Mexican-American would accept.0
