The guitar owners thread
I'm proud new owner of an amazing Fender Telecaster, gifted, after laying in a basement for years. A '52 reissue . It's really a thing of beauty. The thing is: I've never learned to play guitar. The amp will arrive today (currently out for delivery). So basically: I want to learn to play but am a bit uncertain how. I'm not really into metal, high gain stuff, and the small bedroom amp I bought reflects that by having fairly clean sounds. So I guess learning powerchords might not be the best way to start but rather start all at the beginning: learning proper chords and easy songs to start with. Any suggestions on how to start though? Youtube channels or websites?

Thanks a lot I read a lot on different amps and watched videos, tried out a few in stores. Given the limitations (tiny flat, no noise) I could only get a tiny amp. I don't plan to play in front of people, I like mostly clean and really old-fashioned sounds, and electronic toys. So in the end I decided on a second-hand Yamaha THR10C. Hope it's a good decision. I liked it in store, more than the standard version, and certainly more than all the tiny amps that seem to favour people who like metal/noise/lots of gain.
So yeah, while I still can't play I at least have a marvellous bit of decoration in my living room at the moment. And I had lots of fun taking it apart, checking all the cables, connections and electronics and putting it back together again. That was the moment where I wondered if this guitar might be somewhat special (so overly simplistic, and odd, old-fashioned materials).1 -
I'll check out the videos when I get home tonight1

I've never looked for drums. I played guitar for years and have had people ask about learning so I've checked out Justin's page a lot over the last several years.2 -

Just did a quick look and searched for Free Drum Lessons and Drumeo came up. Looks a TON of videos. Worth a look or search as such.

I have a ~1973 Gibson SG that I got in high school. Have not picked it up in years. Going to have to see if I can still play the thing, if not, start learning again.1

Wow, that's a nice guitar! Mind you, I've never looked at guitars before I got this beauty. Ask me what my favourite bands are playing and I'll pull a blank But it seems Fenders and single coil stuff seems to be rather common in what I like. Hmmm1 -

Lots of overtime yesterday and no time to catch up. Such a lovely guitar! I feel unworthy trying to learn on this girl Mine is from 2002, btw and still looks nearly pristine. Fender by now confirmed that it's legit.
Btw, I have no idea about guitars. While I listen to quite a lot of music I'd never be able to tell what kind of guitars my favourite bands play So I basically had that guitar in my livingroom and was like: ok, what is this thing doing here? Take it away! (I'm a bit on the spectrum and don't like unplanned changes to my flat ). Well, when I decided to look at it I found it odd: the pickguard felt like bakelite and not modern plastic (got it right), and then I took it apart, and really fell for the vintage electronics! My little amp arrived yesterday, btw2 -
Just want to say: Justin's website is really, really brilliant! It's rather well set up and invites you to try things. At the moment I'm trying to play a few songs from a few bands I like. No chords but just single notes mostly, and it's not going to bad. I'm also getting better at playing the first 6 chords. Basically, I'm having a ball
Right now I can't imagine leaving my guitar home alone for 2.5 weeks in about a weeks time, when I'm going on summer vacation. Phew!1 -

Hahaha! Lovely guitar, @Mike_Kolmel I like such simple coloured guitars! Sunburst or those colours you often find on Gibsons are just not for me I'm afraid. Simple and un-bling, that's me
This is mine:
Conveniently with copy 50s chair, kind of 50s looking amp and original 50s cabinet (and accidental Mateus Rose box ).
edit: and very accidental weight disk imprints in carpet

I never did learn to read music, it seems very complicated. I don't have the patience or time for that. I did learn to read guitar tab..... to an extent. It's numbers rather than treble clef.
I'm mostly learning with Justinguitar now. And as the sample songs he uses annoy me a fair bit (getting an earworm from mainstream music is torture ) I started transcribing a song and trying to turn it into a piece of music for one, instead of two guitars.0 -

Nice! Melikes
Thanks I thought about getting a guitar on and off for ages. I certainly would have chosen a cheap one and not this. But it would also have been a Telecaster of sorts, or maybe a Mustang or Jaguar. That's just the sound and looks that I like I guess.0 -
First, check out google for some different guides and youtubers. Proper form and technique from the beginning will go a long way in helping you.
Second, print off a chord chart and start with the major chords (D A G C are the big ones, and you can play a lot of songs knowing just these).
Third, not sure the type of music you're into, but find some beginner tutorials online for some songs you like and start having some fun with it.
Fourth, formal lessons would be a big help, but even a beginner book from your local music/book store will teach you a lot (probably all or most of the above). If you can, check with your circle of friends (school, work, church) to see if anyone you know can play and ask. I've very seldom met fellow musicians that are not willing to help out each other.
And finally, be aware that you will start making great improvement, then hit a plateau and start to get frustrated that you're not seemingly improving. Once you hit that, force yourself to learn something new (new chords, new songs, new scales). Anything new, just as long as it gets you out of your comfort zone.0 -

I'm not currently the owner of a guitar but i used to have a black Gibson Les Paul custom exactly like in the photos. If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be - learn how to play well before dishing out on high dollar equipment like that. On the other hand had I not sold it it would've made for a nice decorative piece at home, plus I think it only goes up in value over time.

I need to get a picture of mine. It doesn't have a great pedigree, but it's a beautiful instrument.1

Do post! You know, if I'd ever bought a guitar it would probably have been a simple, scratched, singlecoil Fender. Probably in greenblue0
