I find thier prices a little insane considering the small space and lack of amenities...my local 24 is half the price and four times the room with pool spa steam room and sauna...all classes included and they do corporate discounts for my and my husbands companies....ps..not an ad just some one who likes a little bang for thier buck1

24 as in 24 Hour Fitness? I had a membership there. They have so few classrooms and so many types of classes that I was basically at their mercy. Want to do a cycle class? Only one is at 5:45 am. Want to take a step class? What are you doing at 1:30 PM on Fridays? It was frustrating, either try to find something on their ridiculous schedule or be left to my own devices with cardio machines and weights.
I do wish OT had more showers, but my 24 did not stock their bathrooms with shampoo, body wash, lotion, tampons, etc. They also weren't spotless.1 -

Yeah - so not apples to apples. I’m keeping my LA Fitness monthly $30 membership for the occasional yoga class and treadmills in the winter but otherwise mid-day step classes (hello ‘80’s) and Zumba aren’t my thing.
The lack of amenities/showers, etc luckily isn’t a problem for me @OT since it’s only 6 blocks from my apt.0 -
Our OT just opened last week - I've got 4 classes under my belt so far. I do the 5am class, so there are typically only 10-12 people and I find that the trainers have been great so far. The one on the mic is more focused on the treadmill people and the other one is focused on the floor/weight area and I've noticed them often correcting form.
I belong to another gym as well and only really signed up for OT (8x/mo) to help change things up in my routine. I thought I would check it out for a month, get back into a groove and then cancel, but I think I might stick with it as well as my other gym. I still spin and lift on the days I don't do OT.0 -

The trainer where I was doing lifting and circuit training left my gym. I hate hate hate cardio and really needed some, so I went when our new studio opened. I'm 57, lost 30lb four years ago and have kept it off, lift but not super heavy, do Barre3 as well. I work out 7-8 times a week.
The good:
- lots of cardio, quickly. This is why I first liked it. It's horrible, but it's over and you're done. Strangely, now I don't hate cardio as much. Interesting... I've definitely improved re stamina. I'm a runner! Okay, I'm a jogger. But I started as a reluctant walker.
- for me, cheaper by far than the training sessions at my old place. Sometime my husband and I would train together and it was $90 for both of us. Now we're paying about $36 for the hour.
- I really was hung up at first on the notion that everyone could see how I was doing (ie that I was about to have a heart attack). I soon realized-- no one cares. No one. They care about their own name on the screen.
The bad:
- no one really watches your form in the weight room part of the workout. The one 'trainer' is zipping from telling people what to do on the treadmill, then to the rowers, then messing with the music. It's very frenetic. I see such bad form-- someone is going to hurt themselves. They try, I think, to check form, but the structure of the place makes that impossible. Because I was trained well, I'm okay. But a person new to weights/TRX/etc-- yikes. I think this is OTF's biggest downside.
- it's frenetic. If you don't like chaos, it might not be for you. Our studio has way too few restrooms and no shower. They could take a tip from the Barre3 studios.
- it's a pretty hard sell for memberships after your first free class. But I understand why-- they're a business, after all.
- it's culty. But you know what? All successful franchise studios are. And for a certain kind of client (read: people like me, sigh), culty works lol. I haven't bought an OTF shirt yet. BUT I'M THINKING ABOUT IT lol.
- the science (EPOC-- afterburn lasting 24-36 hrs) is very sketchy imo (I'm a physician and work with a smart physiologist). But as long as OTF is working for me-- I'm okay with it.
-
Yep - I’m officially in the cult now - I bought a water bottle!!4 -
I just did my 70th OTF class today. My all out speed on the treadmill is up to 8 mph and I am using 15 or 20 pound weights, up from 8 pounds when I started. Not bad for a 54 year old woman.8

How long is the cardio portion?0

It’s about 40 minutes split between the treadmill and rower. It goes by so fast with the different intervals too!0 -
I have my first OT session this evening! I'm equal parts excited and nervous. Mostly I am worried that I will be a sweaty disgusting mess (I am one of the lucky ones who has lots of face sweat. . . ) because my cardio is poor. But overall, I am looking forward to trying something new.2

Oh man, and last night was partner workouts with all those pulsing half squats.0 -

I did enjoy partner night but I did slack on the squats. The rowing was great though. I’m just getting up and it’s my first day feeling sore either from back to back days or working harder since I’m getting more into it.1 -

You should try and secure the franchise rights in Stockholm. The business model here is crushing it!0 -
I love Orange Theory and have been going regularly for 4 years now -- I love how the workouts challenge me as I would never work out to that level by myself in a gym. I also like how each workout is different. I will be 50 in November and I like how this workout keeps my muscles tone and keeps my cardio up! Some days when I'm not feeling it - I feel like I still get a good workout with power walking on the treadmill.1

How can a place honestly say it's "science based" when they have no idea about HR training? Went to one class. My max HR is around 195 and my resting is around 50. That's a 145 spread. Anyone that has done any basic level of HR training knows HR training is based on HRR (heart rate reserve) not HRM (HR Max).
They would not accept that my Max HR is roughly 190 or so. I had to use the Age formula, which is wildly inaccurate. So I got like 55 "splat" points on my one class. One other guy (his first class) and myself were the two "highest splat points we've ever seen for first timers". Too bad that it meant nothing because they were basing mine off like a 170 max HR. Was told I'd have to take a stress test to prove my HR max was higher. Even if I wanted to fork out the dough for this, it still wouldn't mean anything unless you take resting HR into account.
For casual runners or people that have never really taken training serious, it's fun and competive. I saw horrid form in the classes. I was told my rowing form was off (I didn't tell the instructor that I'm a competive indoor rower). Her form was atrocious on the rower. I saw very unsafe things on the weights. I was so concerned for one woman that I helped her with form on lateral raises. Her elbows were flapping like she was doing a chicken dance. I couldn't watch her destroy her elbows.
It was a fun one day thing for me. Certainly not a huge fan. Way too much running for me. We spent like 10 minutes or less on the rower. That's not even a warmup on the rower.

Science aside (and funny how after spending time in these forums i've come to question the entire premise more and more) - this is where I failed and injred myself. I am STUPID stupid when it comes to form. I try to remember but I still mess up. Initially I had who I feel was a good coach and took more time with me. But he left the gym. The next trainers were not helpful.
I don't want to put all the blame on the OTF, and obviously I am to blame for bad form at the end of the day, but I still believe much of my neck/elbow injuries started there.
From there I found the classes got annoying after time. I don't want to do 100 squats - i'm not quite there yet. And after 40 reps of one muscle group i need to move out to another one please.
But I was the opposite, I love the treadmill and always wanted more And more than 10min of rowing for a beginner (especially with bad form) isn't good either! But by the end I was barely able to get over 10 splat points, my legs coudn't keep up the speed needed and I could never keep my heart rate up on the floor.

@MikePfirrman When did you go visit? They recently rolled out an updated formula for the heart rate calculation (in the last month or so). From what I'm seeing on Reddit it brought it more in line with what people were seeing on their Garmins and other devices.
Coaches ability will vary location to location, which is true of all franchises. At my location the coaches are great about demonstrating slowly, making sure we know the count/speed, and correcting form. Go too fast and you might find burpees or holding a plank added to the end of your exercises.
For the routine, it changes with each session. So there are rowing heavy days. Most days are labeled either Power, Endurance, Strength, or ESP and even within those categories there is a lot of variation. There are also Benchmark days (some portion of the workout will be timed and recorded and months later when they do it again, you will be able to compare your results). Last month we had a 2,000 meter row benchmark.

My first Infinity was last night - 32 points! Oh and I don’t do burpees - ever!1

How do y'all plug in OTF as exercise?0
-
I just use my Fitbit reading. That way it’s an adjustment in top of my NEAT instead of the full calories calculated in their system.0
-
Thanks! This is helpful. There’s a new one opening in walking distance to me next month and now I have to check it out!0

-
I log it as Circuit Training and use the calories from the workout summary email. In the notes section I put the type of workout and the number of splat points. So for example it might say "Orangetheory, Tornado Day, 22 splat".0

I’ve done ten classes and I’m coming from a sedentary job and barely exercising in the past seven years. For those of you who have taken over a dozen classes, do you still feel absolutely exhausted (good but beat) and need to take a nap a few hours after the class? I’ll go Saturday mornings and by mid afternoon I’m out cold for 2 hours. I can’t believe how whooped I am. Of course I’m also working REALLY HARD!0
