  • I go to the JCC because I work on the same campus as the facility. Even though I end up "working" while working out, the fact that I can go straight from my office to the gym has been very helpful.

I work on a military base, and get to use the fitness center for free. It's very motivating seeing military personnel working out, knowing that their fitness and strength can literally save their lives in extreme situations.

gym fees in aust seem to be a lot higher. i pay $12 per week, which i think is pretty good. my wife goes to contours (similar to curves) and pays 60 per month.

You're right about that! I pay $35 a fortnight! I'd pay less than that a month in America... crazy!

O-gym-o-phobic here. I'm too freaked out by the germs and other people's body odor :) Probably why Beachbody programs work well for me :)

    I go to ClubWorx.
Its a small gym in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, about 3 miles from my home in Willow Spring!
The thing I like most about this gym is the variety of people. All ages mix well. An occasional friendly nod from regulars is welcome. Very little drama or bad manners.
Like their new elliptical machines and treadmills with individual cable TV. Makes the time go by faster.
My only complaint is the indoor pool is in use for kids classes only at the time I'd like to use it most, but kids gotta learn to swim sometime....

    Gold's Gym.

As long as Planet Fitness has the "No Grunting" policy, I will never join them. Sorry but I'm vocal when I lift. I also drop the weights after going heavy. Guess I would get kicked out of PF.

Agreed. I want to see someone do a power clean without making noise with the plates or grunting. But, oh, wait, you are not supposed to lift from the floor, because that is what judgmental people do.

I have a gym in my office building that I use.

LOL yea Greg. Also I guess no one can do any Deadlifting at PF either considering people drop the weight on the floor during the negative motion. =)

Yeah, I have seen pics of signs posted that say “No Floor Lifts”, so deadlifts, cleans, snatches, rows, etc… are all forbidden.

    The Judgement Free Zone®
As the most innovative health club brand in the United States, Planet Fitness is known for a lot of things – our absurdly low prices, our Lunk™ Alarm, and most of all perhaps, for our Judgement Free Zone® philosophy, which means members can relax, get in shape, and have fun without being subjected to the hard-core, look-at-me attitude that exists in too many gyms.

    "the hard-core, look-at-me attitude".....

I don't have that attitude in the gym. I just lift heavy, I train VERY hard, I'm dedicated, and I get results. Hell I don't even bother anyone at my gym unless it's one of my usual spotters on the heavier lifts.

My Gym is California Family Fitness...I love it. they have everything imaginable and it's won Sacramento's Best for 12 years!! The programs offered are a ton-- Lots of locations, tons of classes, childcare, personal training, swimming lessons, and special 'sessions' like Body Fit Challenge- doing that now, just started ( something like Biggest Loser) I compared it to another national chain and wow...no comparison. CFF was like Buckingham Palace comared to other place. VERY happy with it!

The one I went to "cut" the plate bars shorter on the leg press so the most you could put on was 3 45's on each side. Heaviest dumbell was 50lbs. Good thing I was only there to do arms.

I got Planet Fitness. The staff is nice, but the management annoys me with taking so long to fix equipment, and the fact that instead of a power cage or something for glute/ham raises, they have those stupid hip abductor machines and smith machines. Then they post signs saying "don't do this lift or that lift" - one of them being overhead press, which makes me go "wut?!"

Besides the hypocrisy of a "judgment free zone" while using the lunk alarm all the time, the fact that the personal trainer says nothing to everyone arching their back to do heavier barbell curls (in the squat cage =|) really bugs me. I'd like to switch gyms, but the price can't be beat for a poor college student.

Planet Fitness. And as much as they joke about those things in their commercials, I've never been hassled, nor seen anyone hassled for grunting, dropping weights, or any of the other things they make fun of. It's marketing people. It's a very relaxed, laid back atmosphere, and my gym has plenty of machines and free weights, and about 5 power racks, which is nice for free weight work, and having a personal trainer on staff that's included with the membership fee is a really nice bonus.

I wish I was in your planet fitness. Because that sounds like a gym should be. I think I need to look at some other ones.

I just don't get what kind of "image" Planet Fitness is trying to project. The sissy image? I mean if someone is being obnoxious every time they come into the gym and are being rude to other lifters or other people working out, then thats different. But to throw 20 signs up everywhere saying "Dont do this lift" or "Lift this way, but not that way" is just ridiculous. I wouldn't last 5 minutes in that gym before I walked.

You can’t OHP, either!? I knew the “restricted” floor lifts… but OHP?, seriously? Why would you restrict some of the most effective exercises? That just doesn’t make sense.

    I am at two locations.
    1. Tiger Gym (local & independently owned) The focus at the gym is boxing but the owner is a 5th Dan Jeet Kune Do. I take his JKD classes ( 2x per week) and then use the facilities when I have the time.
    2. Studio Nova (local & independently owned). This is a dance school. Here I attend a Capoeira class 2x per week. My Capoeira teacher rents the rooms so there is no available space outside of class time. Unless I want to take a dance or yoga class.

I like these small independent locals. Especially Tiger Gym. I went last night for a quick workout and there was hardly anyone there so I basically got a 2 hr personal training session with the owner. No charge!

I find DC gyms to be pretty pricey - especially if you want to go to one with classes, so I joined Gold's. Found it to be the most reasonable price-wise and I think their classes are pretty good - especially BodyPump. The bathrooms and the air-conditioning aren't perfect and I miss the women only weightlifting room at my specific gym.

If you want to grunt come to Gold's. I feel like it's a requirement.

Whats amusing is that pretty much would turn away ANY beginner bodybuilder that is trying to put on some mass their first year of training. I mean basically PF is saying "No Compound Lifts at all". I'm surprised they haven't said "No Barbell Bench Presses". I mean WTF.

Fitness Connection and the trainers all know my husband and I by name. They have a ton of equipment and a Women's area with the same equipment. When I go sans the hubs, I take advantage of the Women's area. Then, I take advantage of the pool at the bottom of my steps at home, too.

It seems like the most serious gyms are geared toward powerlifters, which is kind of too bad because I'd really like something in between that and the anti-lifting BS you see at PF. Ultimate gym for me would have a ton of power cages, a few sets of dumbbells, a little bit of cardio machines, an olympic size pool, an indoor 200 or 400 meter track, and not be ridiculously expensive.

i go to planet fitness and the YMCA. PF is close to my house; essential for weekend workouts. the Y is free for employees (yay!) and is close to the office.
