Do avocados make you fat?

I usually prefer high-fibre foods in the morning such as oats with some strawberries as I'm trying to eat as little refined sugars as possible. However, I'm trying to add a little variety and maybe eat two slices of brown whole grain bread with an avocado which I know will fill me up for a long time as they're both rich in fibre, but I'm worried avocados may make me balloon. Help!

Eating more than your body requires makes you fat, no food item in and of itself is capable of making anyone fat. If you are that food to the point where you're now in a calorie surplus then that surplus of calories makes you fat. It can be Bananas, apples or avocados. Gaining weight only happens by eating too much food, period.
And if eating less refined sugar makes you feel better and eat in a more controlled manner, go ahead. That said refined sugar also doesn't make you fat. Excess food does.9 -
I eat half a large avocado pretty much every day. 100 calories or so. Packed with nutrition.
Log it and enjoy. No weight problems for me. I just account for it like all other food.5 -
Eating anything to excess might make you gain weight. Especially calorie dense things.
But eating too many avocado's might give you an @Avocado_AS5 What harm or good there is in that, you would have to ask her.3 -
By itself, no. Dietary fat doesn't make you fat (if that is what you are wondering). If eating that avocado adds a calorie surplus to your diet, then it can. But if it does not, it won't.0

I recently went to the doctor and told him I was gaining weight. I thought that by eating healthier foods I was doing ok. well come to find out I wasn't. Its all about the calories in an calories out. He told me to cut out the nuts and avocados. It depends on what your trying to accomplish. If I am trying to lose weight I need to make sure I keep to 1200 calories to lose the weight I want. If I am trying to eat healthier then eating avocados and nuts are fine. Avocados are high in calories but great for your cholesterol vitamins and fiber among other things. They are great for nutrition. But my goal is to lose some of the weight I have been gaining and for that purpose I need to cut out nuts and avocados. After I lose the weight I can go back to a maintenance calorie intake and can incorporate nuts and avocados watching the total calories I take in. Its also how what you eat in your calorie deficit. You can eat avocados but you have to think about the amount of calories you can have a day, and what foods you can eat to meet the calorie intake for the day . You can eat what ever you want but its how you eat it. If you ate Mcdonalds or KFC then first you'll probably go over the goal or you may only be able to eat that meal for the entire day but then you have to also think about was it healthy for for even though you ate in deficit. You can lose the weight and still have a heart attack or health problem because of the quality of the food. SO its choices4

As far as health, if I'm understanding correctly, are you saying avocados aren't nutritious food? Why do you think that? It's a vegetable.
And there's nothing wrong with having KFC every once and awhile. You can still eat plenty of nutritious food and have some fried chicken.9 -

Fast food still can have plenty of macro and micro nutrients but they often come with higher calories. It can still be part of an overall healthy diet.6 -

No one said avocados aren't nutritious. It may be a vegetable but the body processes it as a fat.
It is highly caloric and cannot be eaten endlessly or weight gain can be expected.

Did anyone recommend that instead of your current oats and strawberries or proposed toast and avocado, you should have KFC and Pizza Hut for breakfast?
And if you can eat KFC and Pizza Hut, stay in a deficit, and meet your nutritional needs, what would be wrong with it?8 -

I kind of thought that was what OP was getting at in their reply, but I guess I might be reading it wrong. Regardless, nothing can be eaten endlessly. Yes you have to stick to your calorie limit.2 -

I have avocado toast with 1/4 avocado everyday! I also have almonds. Both have the healthy fat your body needs!!! Just don't eat 100 avocados and a jar of nuts!2

You get fat by eating excess calories. It doesn't matter where those calories come from. If you like avocados, eat them, but don't eat excess calories over the course of your day and you won't get fat.1

When I was eating in a deficit I found that 1/4 avocado was about the amount I could most easily fit into my daily calories. You need some healthy fats such as avocados and nuts for optimal health, just don't go overboard on the calories. WEIGH CALORIE DENSE FOODS such as avocados and log everything, and you will be fine.3

No food is healthy or unhealthy except in context with other foods. Smarties candy is straight sugar and pretty much the definition of unhealthy, but when I use it to quickly raise my blood sugar while running, it's healthy for me. As a starting point, if you hit the macros MFP gives you more or less, you should be okay.
In the case of avocados, all fat has the same number of calories per gram, and your body needs a certain level of fat intake to operate. Different kinds of fats have different effects on inflammation and other processes in your body but they all have the same number of calories. Avocados, to oversimplify, have mostly good effects, so if you also like them, you might as well get the fat you need by eating some avocado. You can't replace one kind of fat with another kind with fewer calories. Fat has more calories per gram than protein or carbs, which can make it harder to lose weight if you eat too much of it, but it also triggers a feeling of satiety for many people. It may take a little work to figure out what works for you - there's no one perfect way to eat, just what works for different people.
You might want to look at the volume eaters threads for some ideas on how to fill up on low calorie foods.

Fat is good for you, and necessary for good health. I use avocado as a fat source because it actually adds some bulk/volume compared to oils that disappear in to my meal4 -

Healthy eating should make you happy and content. A healthy diet is balanced and varied, enough of all you need short term, and not too many calories long term. You can eat what you like in moderation. You decide what moderation means to you - it can also change over time, with the situation and life circumstances. Your weight is decided by the amount of calories you take in (and expend) over time.
You may have to let go of the idea that more (or as little as possible, or extremes in general) is always better.5 -
