First Week Post Keto

Almost a week since I stopped Keto after having done it for six months, losing 60 pounds. I also just stopped HBP medication. I am now up 3 pounds for the week. Not sure which is adding the weight, the diet change or the water retention from stopping the HBP meds. I currently weigh 209 and I am 5-9. I started at 270 and my goal is 169, so I have about 40 to go.
My plan is to do a 1,500 calorie diet, tracking all the way. I am a bit impatient. I always thought of Keto as a sprint and not a marathon. I always wanted to finish as quickly as possible so I could get to a maintenance diet of more balanced foods. Well, I tired of Keto, so am willing to take a short term hit on the way to my goal, but I am getting a bit concerned that this weight gain will continue. Not sure I can watch it go a whole lot higher without jumping back on the Keto train though I do feel like I am eating so much healthier now.

It is water weight filling back into your muscles, nothing more. Keto was hard for me too. There is no weight loss advantage in doing keto.14

It's water weight.4

When you go on Keto you initially lose a lot of water weight. If you stick to the diet *forever* you won't gain it back. However, if you do choose to change the way you eat and add more carbs, then you'll gain it back again.
It's not fat gain, it's just water gain. Don't worry about it. It might rise up even more, but if you were always intending to come off keto when you reached your goal weight, then this was always going to happen. It's almost better that it's happened now when you're in the middle of your journey than happening right at the end, when I can imagine it being even more disheartening.
Stick to the plan that works best for you and stick to the deficit. You're doing great5 -
I am a keto diet hater. I know I might catch backlash for that, but I truly think its extreme and a poor way to treat your body, despite the fact that I know many people lose weight successfully from it. I think you are right and the water weight is what your'e seeing with the fluctuation/gain. You said you feel like you are eating so much healthier, that is a good thing! What matters in my opinion is how you feel. Stick to your plan as best as you can and keep it up!

Keep in mind that sprints also increase the chances of muscle loss, increase to metabolic slow down, etc... Make sure you are getting adequate protein because you will need it since 1500 is a bit low. You should also diet break or include refeeds into your program to ensure you aren't burning out and to help regulate hormone levels.9

FWIW, most people find maintaining a much greater struggle than losing. Your post gives me the impression that you envision maintenance as the land of milk and honey where everything is easy. YMMV, I'm just suggesting you might want to start thinking about life post weight loss.10
-
I agree with everyone else that it's water weight from going back to carbs, and that's ok because water isn't what people want to be losing with weight loss anyway. Keto doesn't have any advantage for fat loss (which is what people really want to lose).
Also could be related to stopping the BP meds if you were on a med that had a diuretic in it. Did you stop the BP meds based on your doctor's advice or just because you felt it was ok to do so (bad idea if you ask me)? Either way, keep monitoring your BP bc it may go back up after stopping meds. Some people aren't able to get off BP meds long term even with positive life style changes.1 -
I am finding Keto is very healthy for me. Three months ago, due to the fact my cardio told me to change to low carb. I started out slowly. Doing low carbs and no sugar, candy, bread, fattening deserts and all. Only had 30 pounds to go to my ideal weight. I lost 13 pounds this way. I decided to do a Keto Diet for the other 17 pounds. It is definitely working, along with the help of MFP. I weigh everything and am eating extremely healthy. No desire for bread or sweets. I watch the macros. KETO suggests 70% good fats (olive oil, olives, avocado, eggs, flaxseed and all) 5- 10% carbs, and 20% protein. I do about 60 + fats, a little over 10 % carbs and a little over 20% protein. I eat a little over 1000 cal. And, you have to drink plenty of water, to flush out the ketones. On Keto, you are rarely hungry. Partly, because all the water you drink. I find this way of eating to be very healthy and even after I get down to my ideal weight, will eat this way, with a few more carbs.16

You really should consider a lot more protein on that calorie level.8 -
I tried Keto, but found that it really aggravated my chronic pain due to back surgery and spinal cord injury. I find I do better eating a mostly plant based diet with added servings of healthy fats (cold pressed oils, avocado, walnuts, sardines, salmon). You have to do what works best for your body in the long term. I liked the "jump start" weight loss of Keto, but like you I put on water weight as soon as I came off Keto. If you concentrate on healthy portion sizes and get exercise, you can lose weight without going to extremes.3

I guess maybe that is why I didn't feel healthy eating Keto. My fats consisted of burgers, sausage, bacon, etc. Not the healthy fats that you spoke about. I feel much healthier on my calorie deficit diet now eating more chicken, turkey, etc. I will see how it goes. I may reboot the Keto in a more healthy way eventually.1 -

When you cut carbs, you also cut a lot of water initially...when you introduce carbs back into your diet, you're going to retain more water. Every gram of carbohydrate holds 4 grams of water.1 -

No, because there isnt. You lose weight by your calorie deficit not the manner of that deficit.12 -

Unless you managed to have burgers, sausage and bacon with trans fats. It was healthy fats.6 -

Outside of initial water weight loss, there is no advantage, deficits being equal. Keto is just one of many ways to help one create a calorie deficit.

Nope. It is a fact.
Pretty sure this is your opinion. As there is not a whole lot of information out there on long term effects of the ketogenic diet.14 -

Keep tracking your blood pressure to be certain, but as others have said it is most likely water weight. It should even out and you'll begin to see that downward trend in your weight.1 -

Of the handful of studies that maintain the same calorie deficit and maintained protein, there was no statistical difference, which does include two metabolic ward studies and a 6 month ad litibum study.8 -

So am I. I feel like it's a fad quick fix which isn't really maintainable in the long run. Not sure why anyone would want to live that way when you can get the same results eating cookies and cake 😂 each to their own I guess4 -

It's very hard to avoid sugar completely, you'll be cutting out many nutritious foods, it's not necessary, and your body makes its own sugar anyway.
No foods are fattening, you gain weight when you eat too much over time.
For any weightloss diet to work, it just has to provide a calorie deficit, but you must be able and willing to stick to it. No magic.
"Extremely healthy" is quite a term. Health is about balance in all things.
The only bad fat is trans fat.
A healthy diet is not only balanced (not to say you can't balance it as you please), it's also varied. Limiting oneself to a certain range of foods, and for no particular reason except fear and ignorance, is unhealthy physically because you'll limit the nutrition you get in, and unhealthy mentally because it's boring and sad and inflexible.
"A little over 1000 calories" is not a good, healthy, daily/average intake. Either your math is off, or you're not talking about your average intake but rare occasions, or you're undereating.
Why would you want to flush out the ketones?
Water has no nutritional value and can't make you less hungry. Sometimes we think we're hungry, but were actually thirsty, that's something else.5
