This may have been answered elsewhere so pardon the redundancy. I cannot always have phone in pocket and have a step tracker but it is not one that can be connected to electronics. Is there any place on the app to just add steps? Thanks for any help.

No, because your activity level already assumes a certain number of steps per day. Log any purposeful walking/running you do for exercise and set your activity level appropriately to account for the rest.0

MFP has an entry in the exercise 'cardio section that you could use for purposeful walks using approximate speed and time.
You could also use this equation.
(Weight in lbs x 0.3) x distance in miles = calories burnt. This again is for a continuous walk, not daily steps.
If it is daily steps you are counting, outside of a purposeful walk, see if you need to increase your activity level so the steps are accounted for.
Sedentary/little activity is around 3500 steps.
Light activity 6-7000.
9-10,000 active.
This is very general and opinions differ as MFP, I don't think, has never aligned a step count to an activity level.
