KETO!!

I know MFP LOVES a good buzzword.

I want to know who has gone on keto.

I’m not looking the Instagram-pinterest-instapot loving-younique/Rodan + Fields selling-lularoe toting-will do any fad diet because a friend of a friend lost 50 lbs- person but someone who went on keto for 1 or more of the following reasons (preferably dr recommend)

Has IBSD and or IBSC
Has an autoimmune disease (I have lichen planopilaris)
Severe depression and anxiety
Has high cholesterol
Has a history of high blood pressure

Has keto helped with any of this and how? Or did it make any of these worse?

    1. This doesn't sound like a debate topic.
    2. Do a search in the general health and fitness section and you'll find about a million keto posts. If you add in your other keywords you'll get even more specific threads.

    Good luck!

Oh damn, I missed that. I, TOO, have an Instant Pot and love it beyond words.

I don't have an instant pot, but have thought about getting one in my next life. I have not, however, done keto for any of the above reasons, but I know of a few people to quit keto because of the worsening of depression symptoms. I do have a history of high cholesterol. It improved with weight loss.

Well, I own an instapot and love it.

I also did keto with my doctor's blessing (although not her recommendation), but not for any of the reasons listed in the OP. Just for good old fashioned weight loss.

Guess I'm not allowed to post either. Oh, wait, I already did.

Yeah, not exactly seeing the debate here either.

Edited to add: Thanks for moving it, MFP modperson. ;)

I have high cholesterol, very high triglycerides and my blood pressure is high even with medication. My HDL is also pretty low at 28. I take 100mg Losartan with 12.5mg hctz daily. Even with the meds my BP was regularly above 130 even into the 140s. I started dieting 8 weeks ago and keto 4 weeks ago.
The first four weeks was eating in moderation and portion control. Then I started keto.
My original weight was 211lb and I’m currently at 192. So 19lb loss in 2 months.
My BP rarely ever goes above 120/75 these days and I measure it 2 or 3 times per day. Although I’m still taking the meds. But still, I’ve noticed a big difference there.
I will ask the doc to measure my cholesterol at the end of September. I suspect my triglycerides will come down significantly and hope more HDL goes up.

My keto diet initially consisted of 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs. I have recently changed it to 60% fat, 30% protein and 10% carbs. And 1860 daily calories.

I struggle to eat that much because I also do intermittent fasting. I do not eat breakfast. So I go 16-18 hours without eating after dinner. The struggle is because I have to eat that many calories in 2 meals.
I eat at least 3 cups of leafy greens (spinach and kale mostly) per meal with 1 tbsp olive oil. That many greens fill me up quite fast. I get my fat mostly from the olive oil, dark chocolate (90% cacao), MCT oil and cheese. I eat turkey, chicken and salmon for protein as well a Orgain protein shakes.
Eating 5% carbs is challenging which is why I raised it to 10%.
I’ve been exercising for the last 6 years 3 or 4 times per week and at least one hour each time. I mostly do weight lifting but also 1 hour a week of bootcamp. Lately I’ve introduced 15 mins of HIIT before each weight lifting session.

So to summarize, my BP has gotten way better. I don’t think it was the keto, but rather the weight loss. However, the keto made me lose weight quite fast.

I think the Intermittent Fasting has made a big difference in my daily calorie deficit as well. And I rarely get hungry. All that fat just makes me very satisfied throughout the day. Also I feel very awake and focused in the mornings.

My goal is to reach 188lb and experiment with my macros to maintain 188-191lb. I’m also looking forward to my next cholesterol test and see how I’m doing there.
