If those candies are the ones I’m thinking of, they’ve been around a very long time, small, hard, gummy type squares that can take out a filling or tooth or dislocate your jaw in a nanosecond. We called them jujubes (ju-ju-bes). Haven’t seen those in decades!

I was thinking of the ones we might have had when we were kids...my brother loved them - not like the ones you described...I remember them being super chewy, but not 'hard' per say...:

Ohhhh!! I loved those. Soft, chewy. In U.S. they were called JujyFruits, I think.
