How did you quit soda?

I'm definitely an emotional eater and when I'm stressed at work or home soda is like my go to stress reliever. I've quit drinking soda in the past when I was pregnant but I had a different reason to then. Anyone have any tips or advice on how to kick the habit?

Have you tried diet soda? That did it for me. Then after a while you can transition to the flavored water like Le Croix. I wouldn't stay on the diet soda long because of the aspertame and or phenylalanine. It just takes time and dedication. I'm a professional emotional over eater FYI.33

I stopped by going to carbonated water. For me the fizzy water is all I need not the diet sodas. Eventually bought a soda stream to make my own.4 -

You do know that this amino acid occurs naturally in things like meat, milk and eggs at MUCH higher concentrations than that found in any diet soda?
Also, aspartame is simply 2 amino acids combined together and poses no demonstrable health risks for humans...35 -
Diet Root Beer is my go to these days.3

I quit cold turkey 6 months ago. After about 2 weeks of drinking nothing but water, soda tastes so sugary I dont know how I was ever able to consume it. The lack of caffeine really sucks the first week, but it was worth it to have that vice in check.8

Yup, and the only reason they add it as a warning to cans is so people with PKU (a genetic disorder) can avoid it, as it can cause serious brain and nerve damage upon consumption. For everyone else, the effects only occur in high doses, but that can be said for anything (water poisoning is a thing, for example).

I quit regular soda one day at a time. Dr. Pepper may as well have been running in my veins. And don't even mention Barqs Root Beer to me, because my nose would start twitching, my arms itching, possibly some drooling. lol
But now I'll have the occasional Coke-No Sugar (IDK if that's the same or just a different label than Diet Coke) and that satisfies the urge. Why don't they make a Dr. Pepper zero? The Diet Dr. Pepper doesn't taste the same...but Coke-No Sugar tastes pretty close to the real thing to me.0 -
after 2lter daily for over 20 years. I quit cold turkey. but now occasionally have a soda..maybe once a month or so. It was hard but worth it. I simply quit buying it so It was not there to grab. I would have a cup of coffee if the caffeine itch got to bad....0

I just switched to diet. It wasn't as good at first but I got used to it, and now I prefer it. I can't drink regular soda anymore.1

Any time I quit something, whether cigarettes or soda, it is cold turkey. After abstaining for a while, I don't have the desire for it anymore. Now on the very rare occasion when I have a sip of soda, it tastes so syrupy sweet I can't even enjoy it.3

I just quit drinking it, I started drinking flavored water. Then I went to just water, drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning and then water.0

I switched to diet soda and currently drink it as a treat but mostly drink seltzer or still water.
OP, is it the caffeine that gives you that lift?
For anyone who chooses to reduce their soda intake, if it is caffeinated you need to taper off slowly (which is where the diet version of the same type can come in handy if you are also trying to lose weight) or go cold turkey when you are in a position to deal with the excessive sleepiness and/or headaches caffeine withdrawal can cause.1 -

Hi. I quit soda about 6 years ago. The carbonation always seemed to bloat me, and I just decided to stop.
Mind you, I drank diet Mt. Dew all day long and still felt exhausted all the time.
Since today I have drink water, ice tea and coffee and iced coffee, with an occasional chai tea as a treat.
Do you want to stop soda? find something that you enjoy just as much.
When I first quit I started to drink those carbonated flavored waters you can find in Most water aisles. having the flavor really helped me.

I quit diet soda yeeeeears ago cold turkey. I just started drinking iced tea and then plain water instead.

I never drank much soda and just started drinking just water and unsweetend teas. I like drinking water or teas so it is not particularly difficult.
Why are you totally giving up soda? Is it necessary? Can you just reduce the amount or switch to diet soda?
If it your tool for dealing with stress you will have to figure out a different stress reliever.

When I realized how many calories it had, honestly it was pretty easy. The main thing I wanted was caffeine, which I could get elsewhere.1

I switched to a zero calorie carbonated drink called Sparkling Ice. It tastes great and fruity, has the carbonation I love. I can't stand the taste of La croix, so this does it for me. I can get them for like$1 a bottle, sometimes lower on sale. there's 2 servings per bottle, so I just refrigerate whatever is left for the next day or next meal if I don't want water with it. I allow myself 1 soda on the weekend. There are certain foods I just like it with, or if we eat out. It's my little cheat for the week.0

Cold turkey is the best way. I quit drinking soda years ago when I realized how many calories I was drinking. I'd rather eat my calories. With that said, it can be a tough road and every now and then I'll have a coke, sprite or barq's or a sip of whatever my hubby has and it never satisfies like it used to.6

Just stopped drinking sodas "cold turkey" about 2.5 yrs ago. It wasn't an addiction, just a bad habit.
Did it once b4 about 5 yrs go, but relapsed. My resolve now is better than it was b4.0 -
Quit and started counting days and went cold turkey. I went to all water or water with lemon. Would ask myself if it was worth starting over. Everyone has their don't event think about it items (have not had success on doing this with sweets) Nothing is a magic bullet to amazing success, just determination towards your goals.1

I drink Spark instead. Find a drink that works for you, I want the caffeine and vitamins so I use Spark.4
