I just want someone to tell me that it is possible to go from obese to thin at my age. I have 4 kids and my youngest is 10 weeks. Looking for friends/accountability partner/mentor.

Of course it's possible, just eat less/move more for long enough, without trying to overdo it. I was 43 when I joined MFP, lost 50 pounds in a little over a year, have maintained a healthy weight for almost four years. My eating and moving habits have changed, but my attitude and mindset have changed too. Welcome, and congrats on the new baby!13

Hi, I wondered the same thing when I started. You have this idea that your metabolism has slowed down or something, right? Put those fears and misconceptions aside - there are plenty of people from so many different backgrounds and ages on here, from youngies to grannies and all sorts - it works ... for ALL OF US!!! So just trust in the process and look forward.
I am over 40 and I have 3 kids, I am only half way there but I started with a BMI of above 40, now it's about 31 (so I am leaving Obesity soon, YES!) and I am aiming to get into the healthy range of course.
If I can do it ... YOU CAN DO IT!10 -
I spent most of my life either overweight or obese. I am now in my 40's and am finally a healthy weight. To do this I simply moved more and ate less, counting calories to keep me accountable. I have been maintaining this loss for over a year now and plan to continue that way into my 50's, 60's, 70's ........
If you believe in yourself then you too can be where I am. Just take it one step at a time and make gradual changes that you can stick with forever. This is a journey that will never end.7 -
Well, I started on June 19th and have lost 13 lbs since (have lost 29 lbs since December). I turned 50 this February, so yeah, it's easily possible at any age. My eating habits and especially my attitude towards food have changed a lot during that time. As for exercise, well, I don't do much - I just walk between 9-16k steps a day to earn some extra calories.8

I'm in my early 40's and the smallest and the fittest I've ever been.
After spending most of my life chubby, overweight or obese, I lost over 80 pounds in my late 30's on my own and have been maintaining since without any regain.
I was aware of how many calories I was consuming everyday (planning & tracking my meals, reading labels, finding healthier substitutions etc.) and I did light to moderate workouts often. Nothing intense.
I've developed healthy and sustainable habits that will carry me over for the rest of my life and I did a complete change on my lifestyle.
I go for evening walks instead of snacking and watching TV. I cook almost all of my food myself instead of grabbing fast food for most of my meals. I've made fitness a priority in my life instead of not working out or being active ever. Changes like that over time really adds up. I enjoy the workouts I do and the food I eat so that really helps too.
Also I have many 40+ MFP friends that are doing amazing losing, maintaining or working on gaining muscle. So it's definitely possible to lose and keep the weight off if you're willing to work for it and stay committed.
Good luck!21 -
I am almost 41 and feel like I am in the best shape I have ever been in both internally and externally. It is possible. But you have to to be honest about what you consume. It’s not necessarily easy (though it does get easier) but it is absolutely possible to improve your health and your body shape after 40.

Oh, yes, it is definitely possible, as many here can attest. I am 64 and went from 168 lbs down to maintaining at 110 lbs since December. As lulehlu mentioned, you must be willing to be very honest about what you are consuming every day. And hold yourself accountable. It's not easy, but it's worth it.4

Love see all these post would love to be friends with anyone that is in our age range that is working on a healthier life by losing weight4

I’m 62, 5’2.5” and have lost 40.5 pounds since January-from 173 to 132.5. (obese to normal BMI). I don’t believe my age held me back in the least — as soon as I consistently ate an appropriate number of calories for me I began to lose consistently.

I am 50 and have lost over 80 lbs. I am back to running, started lifting and hiking farther than ever. My joints do not hurt near as bad (osteoarthritis, degenerative disk disease...), my mood has improved (thanks to running) and I like myself again. It is so worth the time and effort! Good luck on your journey!!5

yes it is possible. i haven't reached my ultimate goal (I am soon to be 43 years old) but i have reached small goals 10 and then 20 pounds+ so far. it is taking a lot longer than weight loss did when i was young and could lose 20 pounds in a month, but progress is progress. just be patient with yourself and my ultimate goal isn't to be thin but to be at a healthy weight. new studies say that being a bit "overweight" per the standard height/weight chart leads to a longer life anyway. so that's my goal. i find that that weight is when i feel my best anyway. just a tad overweight. (i have heavy bones and am fairly muscular though) being thin just can have such negative connotations around it, like malnutrition and excessive frailty and such. I just hope you are in a good mindset regarding your body image. and if you are still breastfeeding, now is a great time to take advantage of the excessive calories you are expending to lose weight. with four kids it must be hard to find time to yourself, but if you can fit in a 40-45 minutes exercise video or something equivalent that really works you into a sweat you will probably make great strides if you can do it at least once or twice a week. I recommend step aerobics personally. I find it fun and really challenging and fairly quick and effective.

I'm 42. I'm about 5-10lbs away from my goal (I think, as my goal has shifted from purely weight to physical ability and overall health).
Here's my before (about 300lbs - ~50lbs lighter than my heaviest, and last week at 161lbs).

At age 59-60, lost from 180s to 130s at 5'5" (so obese to normal weight). Now 62 and heading into year 3 of maintaining. This is probably my clearest before and after, though I overshot goal weight and am up a few pounds from the after photo at this point. (Photo's probably 120ish.)

I had been obese all my life. I started losing weight when I was 39 and over 27 stone. I am now 41, 11 1/2 stone, and a BMI juuust inside the normal range.
So yes, it can be done.1 -
I found MFP when I was 42 in 2012, got to goal in 2013 and been in maintenance ever since
I had 25lbs to lose, so was in the over weight category rather than obese.
Its absolutely doable and worth the effort.
All the best.

I am 40. I have lost 90lbs/41kg in the last 12,5 months and plan to lose some more. Age is the irrelevant number on this journey. The only number you need to know and watch is the number of calories 😉3

i am 51 and lost 45 pounds on Weight Watchers. I have been in maintenance now for about 5 months. I am now a lifetime member. WW has always worked for me. I needed that accountability that i could not get doing it alone. I have also used this site as well. It is definitely possible to lost weight and to become that you you want to be. Good luck to you in this journey2

It's possible.
I'm 48. My highest weight was 230. I'm now 141, at 5'4". You have to find what works for you. I tried and failed about a billion times before I found a plan I can stick with forever. For me, that's lower carb and sugar, higher protein, and no forbidden foods. I drink wine, I eat pizza, and I refuse to eat low fat cheese. I also exercise 6 days a week, including lifting weights.
Feel free to friend me

Hell yes, it is possible!! I'm 42, had my first kid at 39 and my second just shy of my 41st bday. They are now 2 and 1 and I'm back to pre-preg weight already. I gave myself plenty of time but I also made sure I started eating right and exercising when my youngest was about 6 months old. I LOVE running but I've been injured so watching my CICO is the most important thing. I'm getting back to physical activity now that my injury is healing.
Yes it can be done and you DESERVE IT!5 -
@AnnPT77 , we have such similar stats. You look amazing and I have a few more pounds to go. You’ve been an inspiration to me here in more ways than one—thanks so much!

Aww . . . you're so kind (blush). :flowerforyou:

Hello. You can do it!!! I am 41 years old and I lost 150lbs, and I have been maintaining for about 2 months now. I started at 300lbs and I am currently around 148lbs (5'8"). I have a 4 year old boy, too. I have not been this weight since college and struggled yo-yo'ing for years. But MFP has been my break through. It keeps me honest, and I have never had remorse or regret about what I eat anymore, even on cheat or bad days. I also got really sick, and that woke me up too. I eat well now and I do light cardio every once-in-a-while. Just keep focused and never give up.2

You rock!
Love your attitude!1 -
Yes I lost a good amount of weight and I'm well into my 40s.
I've now changed my weight loss journey more into a fitness one and am loving it.
Good luck!3 -
I'm 45 and have a 19-year-old. I'm down 45 pounds since last January, went from 182 to 137, so obese to normal BMI. Five pounds to go! I'm in better shape now than before I had my son.7
-
I lost 106 pounds at 59 and will be 62 this month and am still maintaining. Yes it is absolutely possible!5
-
Very possible. 5 foot, four inches and my highest weight was 196 lbs. I lost 46 lbs. when I was 50 years old and kept 26 of those pounds off up until now. You do have to watch out for menopause--I regained those pounds due to a combination of menopause and a painful injury that slowed me down for a couple of years (cortisol can affect your weight, alas). Back on track with MFP and down 10 pounds since January. Slow but steady. My ultimate goal is around 140-145, which will put me at a healthy BMI.2
-
Of course. I am 60, have 4 (grown) kids, decided to make changes when my son announced his engagement. Have lost 70lbs, gone from uk size 20 to uk size 8. Beem maintaining for over a year, have lost all my aches and pains, never been fitter2
