My family were awful I don’t think they even realized it. Being Asian there are no boundaries to what you can say to each other. My cousins would say “you’d be pretty if you lost ALOT of weight” as I was a pudgy teenager back in the days. Oh another one was “why is your face so fat”. This was a common greeting at family get together. I dreaded these growing up. Ah now I’m older I’ve moved as far as possible from them.. bliss4

I cried real tears there rest of the evening after my friends left. I was so embarrassed.
Oh my I am SO MAD that your Mom said that to you 😱 How awful! I am so sorry that she said that...it would’ve crushed my feelings as well.1 -
"you still haven't lost that baby weight? It's been what? 3 years? " coming from family members.... It's actually been almost 4. But I worked a full time job 50 plus hours a week. I have a house to keep up so my eating habits are not the greatest. I just recently became a stay at home mom so I'm getting myself on track now.4

If you think "fat shaming" is bad in the US, visit China.
I work for a China based company and spend up to 2 months at a time here.
My colleagues regularly mock me behind my back. Some are have actually told me what has been said. Some still think I fake my endurance swimming numbers because I don't look like i can swim 17.6km.
Others have said I'm fat because I drink too much beer. Yet I don't drink any alcohol and they have never seen me drink alcohol.
On WeChat I'll throw them some shade regarding their gossip. That shuts them up for a little while.4 -

One of my Chinese colleagues, without even knowing what I was drinking, said rather loudly, "you know that is pure sugar."
Ha. It was water with a sugar free enhancer added. But they do this crap a lot.2 -
I always got the "you have such a pretty face if only you'd lose some weight" from family, family friends, friends, family of friends. I don't get that anymore - guess I no longer have a pretty face lol.5

I had a friend ask me out of the blue, "Are your parents concerned about your weight?" Another time when I was talking about taking a 3 hr a week side job, she said, "You'd be better off using those 3 hrs to exercise."
This same friend also made a crack on another friend's being overweight at my birthday dinner back in May. Even though it wasn't directed toward me, I still took affront to it.
Funny how taking time and distance away from her makes me feel 100 lbs lighter

A friend patted my stomach and said "You don't even have that big of a beer belly".
Uh, thanks?2 -
I have been overweight my whole life. And I have had plenty of negative comments and bullying over the years. These days as a middle aged adult I get a lot of nasty comments at work from people I look after. I am a caregiver for people with dementia and mental health . And some do know what they are saying. I do get offended at times , but as I am their caregiver I’m not allowed to say anything bad back to them. My skin is not as thick as it sometimes needs to be. I suffer depression and anxiety. But my issues are not from being overweight. My excess weight is a side effect of my emotional state. I have a history of abuse, trauma and am still struggling with getting myself how I want to be. It shouldn’t be up to other people how I should look.3

This is so mean! But on the bright side, you have a pretty face! My face isn’t so great thin, and as I’ve gained it gotten much worse.3 -
I very slowly went from 300+ down to 160-170s and have maintained it for about 6 years now. Mostly what I get is "you always carried the weight so well, I wouldn't think you had lost over 100? Really? Are you sure!?" and other weird comments along those lines. A lot of my close girlfriends who are all within a similar size range (I'd say every single one of them wears between size 8-14) & say things like "you weren't THAT big before" or "Did you wear plus!?" ummm yeah bish I wore size 26/28 at one point...pretty sure I was considered super plus, thanks. And they all knew me then, too. It's like I'm not able to fully enjoy being smaller because everyone points out that I "looked fine" or "wasn't that big" when that is totally not even the case! My own mother says this also...it's like they are all in denial that I was so fat. To be fair, I always had kind of a big curvy body with thinner face and hands...I'm not that person who went from looking like Honey Boo Boo's mom to being skinny, since I'm still curvy & carry some extra pounds at 5'8"...but come ON...when you lose 130 lb it is a big change!! I honestly never bring this stuff up because I know their comments will freak me out yet again.3
