About allotted calories per day

Hi, I just joined & my question is, I am allowed 1200 calories per day, then when I exercise it shows the calories I burn and adds to my daily allowance of how many more calories I am allowed~ do I eat those calories or do I still stay with the 1200 calories I am suppose to stick to in order to lose the weight. Thank you!

    eat your exercise calories. You have to fuel your workouts. (BTW... this can occasionally be a hot topic.)

    Make sure to read the newbie posts on the forums; they explain this quite in-depth.

    In order to keep your caloric deficit at your weekly loss goal amount you must eat them.

    This in not great advice. For some that have 75+ lbs to lose you may not have to eat them, but if you have less to lose you should, or you risk burning muscle not just fat.

    exactly my point, its different for everybody who uses MFP

    for some people being told to do something on here is taken for granted

    we are all just offering our advice in different ways, I would never tell anyone to do anything, im not a doctor.

    so if you go to the gym and burnt 250 cals , you come home and eat 250cals . And the point of going to the gym to burn off those cals was ????

  • Thank you for the responses. My start weight is 170 I would like to get to 130 although based on my height at 5'5 and my BMI index, I am 20 pounds over. So like today, I burned 1497 calories by doing cardio and weight training- I ate about 1000 calories so far today and I am allowed 1200 ~ so now the calories left to eat is 1697, but that's OK, no I am not going to eat all that, I still have dinner to consume which will be meatloaf and veggies, for a snack I will have a yogurt, so in essence, I think I answered my own question with everyone's help and I appreciate it! At leas I know the extra calories are there if I want them and if I make wise choices in my food selection, I should be ok.
  • You know that is really something for you to decide. If you are hungry then eat. Normally a workout in the morning means ill be eating a little more than a workout in the evening. You dont want your body to go into starvation mode! if you are hungry and the calories are there, eat them. if you arent hungry dont eat. These calorie counters arent 100% if you cook a lot on your own and things. Today i havent eaten my workout calories because A) i just did the workout and ill take a shower and go to sleep, B) im still full from dinner so why eat more. BUT if i get hungry i might eat a snack... to each his own. just dont eat toooooo few calories or you risk messing with your metabolism in a negative way.
  • a little bit of both, you NEED fuel for exercise so going too low on the not burning what you eat can be bad but you don't need to eat back all you earn. I eat about 1700 daily and try to burn 800-1000 in exercise so I end up with about -600-1000 and its been working for me so far.

    highly doubtful. The number on the cardio machines are usually way off and the MFP database overestimates as well.
    Unless you were working out HARD for 3 full hours or so?

    I am a big advocate of eating all your exercise calories but only if you're SURE you actually burned all those, like with a BodyBugg or HRM. If you ate all those, you would probably eat up your entire deficit and only maintain your weight, not lose.

    That is precisely why some people say they eat them and don't lose. They are eating the wrong amount.

    I know it is different for everyone based on height weight and endurance, but as a point of reference, I have to go ALL OUT for a full hour to burn 300.

    Well a) the benefits of exercise extend far beyond creating a calorie deficit, and b) I'd never be able to stick to my calorie allowance if I didn't exercise up some more to eat, and that's what has made MFP sustainable for me, unlike any other diet!

    Yes. Healthy heart. Strong, flexible muscles. People who exercise regularly often report higher self-esteem. I so hate the question, "why exercise" if it's not to burn calories to create a deficit. When you're at your goal weight, you won't exercise?

    If you were your goal weight, but did not exercise, you'd look soft. There'd be no healthy toned look.
