My name is Lisa. I'm 71lbs over weight and I'm trying to watch what I eat. However I have hypothyroidism and it makes it very hard....I'm hoping that the app I have downloaded will help.

You (as in everybody) lose weight when you eat less (than you burn), for real, consistently, and for a long time. MFP is just a set of tools to help you eat less (and move more), it's you who makes it work, or not. Trying to watch what you eat and hoping the app will help, relying on an illness to make it hard, does not make it sound like you want it to work.3

Hey dont listen to the comment above mine, that person obviously is not educated on hypothyroidism (I am a nurse and I have hypothyroidism- the auto immune version) so i understand how hard it is to lose weight, its a tough gig! It took months of med changes and working out really hard (2 hours 7 days a week) and i was seeing no results until recently my meds must be at the right dosage for the moment because i have been really sucessful with my weight loss, losing about 6.5kg in 2 months,
Make sure your having regular blood tests to you know your taking the correct dosage of the meds and keep eating healthy and doing some exercise and hopefully you begin to see resultsfeel free to add me though you can have a look at my open diary, i log daily!

That is an uneducated and unsupportive comment, we are meant to build each other up on here...5 -

Welcome! Is your condition well controlled by medication? If so, you should be able to lose weight just fineRead the Most Helpful Posts threads pinned to the top of each forum, there is lots of great beginner info in there. Log accurately and consistently and be patient - you'll get there. Good luck!

I am hypothyroid and have lost 106 pounds at 60+ years of age. You can lose but it might be a bit slower. As others have said get your meds sorted out first then you should proceed much like everyone else albeit a bit slower. My average rate of loss the first year was around 1.4 per week. The second year it was way slower. My maintenance calories are around 1350 for a 5'5" woman of 62 at 145 pounds.3

Hi I'm new, not even sure how to use this part of the app. I too have the exact same thyroid issue and would like to follow your daily log. I need some inspiration to get up and get moving.0 -
Once your hypothyroidism is properly controlled through the appropriate level of medication, weight loss won't be more difficult than if you weren't hypothyroid.
I have Hashimoto's. I'm 65. Lost 75 lbs 3 years ago and have been in maintenance ever since.

First of all welcome aboard! To be successful you have to understand what hypothyroidism does and does not do.
Hypothyroidism impacts your appetite, not hunger. It is critical for you to learn the difference and how you respond. Hunger is your body's need for food. Appetite is the desire for food, largely hormone driven and very specific - sweet, salty, and usually specific.
There is no impact to metabolism. Be very careful what you read on the internet and in old medical texts as these are based on observation prior to metabolic chamber testing. In the most extreme cases patients were observed to have a 5% decrease in REE. That's 80 kcals/day out of a 1600 kcal/day caloric budget. Note that the degree of instrument error is greater than 5%, meaning there is no measurable impact to metabolism.
You need to know your full thyroid panel - TSH (0.4-4.0), fT3, fT4, rT3 and keep these records yourself.
I had a total thyroidectomy in 2000 and put on 70 lbs over the next 14 years. This had nothing to do with thyroid and everything to do with me eating a calorie surplus. In 2014 I joined MFP and lost 60 lbs in the first year through implementing a modest calorie deficit and increasing my activity. I've been at maintenance for the last 3 years.5 -
People with hypothyroidism can lose weight as easily as anyone else. You just have to make sure your meds are correct and you might have to go a little lower in calories than a person with a fully functioning thyroid. And by a little lower, I mean 100-200 calories, nothing drastic.
It's not as difficult as many will lead you to believe.

You may find reading into the condition helpful. No two persons have exactly the same experience of this diagnosis. Some of us have lived with the condition for years before being properly diagnosed because our "numbers" were always in range. Our personal system being at different ends of the approved scale to others. I acquired much less frequent symptoms.
May I suggest you read into the condition, one site provides a list of 300 associated symptoms which I found very helpful, you could work from 300 symptoms of:) Thyroid conditions do not simply come down to weight gain for everyone.
Most countries have their own national support sites, which provide very similar information. In the past I looked at the Canadian and Australian ones as well as our own Thyroid UK. I also found the hypothyroidmom very helpful, with good traceable science. Stop the thyroid Madness, STTM comes as a book or site, also interesting traceable science. Some criticise it for being pro natural thyroid products but it explains the benefits of all. There are also free access medical papers from hospitals and universities. You may find it helps to know about what might be going on.
I fundamentally disagree, there can be impacts on one's metabolism if you have and autoimmune condition identified by antibodies, Hashi which is hypo often after periods of up and down, or have Graves which is hyper. If you do not have antibodies your issue is probably dietary, lacking essential nutrients but this is less common in western countries. Many with antibodies find eliminating some foods useful, dairy for casein or lactose or both, glutein in cereals, soy can be inflamitory in and of itself, I can't remember if it also comes in under cruciferous veg where the flower has 4 pettals, which can also be problelmatical for some. It all depends on which or how many food molicules are mistaken within our bodies through molicaule mimicury. (sorry it gets, can get deep)
Some of us find exercise can really make us worse. So much depends on what is driving your conditon which is why having a good medical practice behind us is really useful.
I hope you have the best most up to date advice going. Do what is right for yourself, no one else.2 -

I have hypothyroidism and finally have meds in check with a naturopath. It is very difficult for me to loose weight. I have been following WW for the last 5 months and only lost 7 lbs. I found it interesting though when I started using MFP to check calories along with WW points...I was eating around 1100 calories a day. I am a 44 year old female that is 5' 5" and weigh 167lbs. That is too low....I started increasing my calories to 1400 a day and lost 2lbs in a week. My naturopath told me with hypothyroidism it is important to not restrict calories too much as it may have the opposite affect on your body. I think everyone needs to experiment a bit to find out what works best for their own body.2
