What do your meals look like? If you have pictures can you post them.

Any tips and suggestions on food choices. My father has type two and I’m afraid he’s eating too much carbs I want to help prep his meals.

Thank you.

I've been trying to limit my meals to "two carb servings" (maximum of 30g per meal/snack)since my diagnosis in August. Even with Metformin, it's not working well, but my BS is out of the 200's and averaging around 175 now. I eat very little sugar, and mostly drink only water and really *kitten* beer now(hello, Mich Ultra!)

Remember, Type 2 is hereditary. You will do yourself a favor by watching your diet now, as well. My Dad became diabetic at age 72, and he's 78 now. I contracted this at 53, while in the best shape of my life. No one in my family told me that my Grandma had it at age 28, until she died at the young age of 96(broken hip).

My meals are shifting into a more plant based menu, more whole foods(potato with the peel, apples with the skin, etc.), less red meat(especially if carbs are also on the plate), lower carbs in total(moderation of bread, white rice is out), and more protein(eggs. lots of eggs, lol) Right now, i'm learning. I want to get this figured out. Thickened blood effects a lot of things on your body(Heart capilaries, Liver, kidneys, sex drive) it just can't get to where it needs to be easily. I wish you luck.

Before you do anything, log his food and see how many carbs he is eating, then find out what his medical team recommends for a maximum number of carbs. You could easily find out that he is eating just fine. Diabetics do not necessarily have to go low carb, many do well on moderate carb, but it is an individual need and everyone needs to follow the recommendations they are given.

If you do need to reduce his carbs here are some easy ways to do it:
    • Have sandwiches with one slice of bread, not 2
    • Reduce the fruits and up the vegetables
    • Limit sweets
    • Substitute root veggies like turnips for potatoes in soups and stews
    • Don't serve rice on the side of a dish, mix it in with the dish and serve all as one (especially good for stews and casseroles)
    • Cut sugary drinks like soda and juice
    • If he is a beer drinker, lower the amount and/or switch to light beer.

I am T2Dm and eat moderate carbs. The above are my favorite tips that I follow.
