Losing confidence after gym instructor help

Hi need advice. I've joined my local council run gym and the instructor has told me that I'm not doing enough work and that I don't burn calories in the first 20 minutes of my workouts. I'm doing 7 miles on the bike then move to rowing machine and weight I also walk about 6 miles a week . I've lost 3 stone 10 since may and thought I was doing well but his attitude is really knocking my confidence I've a long way to go still. Is he right or what more should I be doing.

No, he isn't right9

He sounds uneducated on the science of weight loss. Don't listen to him.
The simple truth is that weight loss is about creating a calorie deficit. Eat fewer calories than your body needs in a day and you will lose weight. Exercise helps you burn more calories than if you are sitting on the couch, and therefore helps create a calorie deficit.9 -
Thank you that's what I thought but I've allowed him to knock me. he seems to find me every time I'm in the gym and make some sort of unhelpful comment but im new to the fitness side of life so doubt myself5

Next time he approaches I would say, "Good morning! I would appreciate it if you keep any personal judgments to yourself. Thanks."
Do you have headphones? The old, "Sorry, can't hear you," while pointing to your ears is always good, too.9 -
Ask him, "What is your problem, dude?"3

Headphones are the best gym conversation killers.10

Think Ile just stick the head phones in and ignore him in future. Thanks folks for the advice really appreciate it7

Ignore him. Wear headphones and say "sorry, I can't hear you." You sound like you're doing perfectly fine!2

I prefer *kitten* off, but same general idea
Or if you want to be nice, 'If I want your advice I'll ask for it. Until then, ta!'7 -
lol... just tell him to bugger off - that you've got this.
Awesome job by the way!!3 -
Is he an employee of the gym? If so, I'd talk to the owners and tell them that this person is giving really inaccurate advice. Ignoring him is best but I personally would speak up and tell him to leave me alone and that I don't want or need his "help".6

He is the main instructor and has been there for years. he does your first induction and then again in 12 weeks to see your progress I was pleased with the amount I was doing considering I'm still over 22 stone and it takes a lot to walk in to a gym in the first place but find he really deflates my efforts7

Maybe you could find a new gym where you don't have someone hovering over you telling you you're not doing a good enough job4

I recall my biology teacher in high school saying something similar. Something along the lines of your body taking the first 20 minutes of burning through your glycogen stores before you start burning fat. Total bro science. Your body burns calories just by breathing. Keep doing what you are doing. Ignore gym bros trying to offer you "advice".6 -
He just wants to get you to pay for personal training. If you think you're doing great on your own, why would you pay him?
Put him on ignore.

" I've lost 3 stone 10 since may and thought I was doing well " The only opinion that matters is yours. Are you satisfied with your results to date? Are you happy with your overall fitness level today, considering all improvements? Are you happy/enjoying your workouts as currently constituted? Are you confident that further improvement is n the works doing what you're doing? If yes, the response is, "Thanks, have a nice day".5

Think your right I just need to trust myself abit more and keep doing what I have been and Ile get there eventually. Thank you for taking the time to respond everyone it's helped clear my head x2 -
I sounds like you've got this sorted in your own head (good show!), but just wanting to add this: From what you've said, he sounds very controlling/domineering. Allowing him to undercut your (very much deserved) confidence would be playing his game. Ultra-controlling people can be dangerous (perhaps especially so when it's ultra-controlling men attempting to manipulate women). Please don't play his game: Play yours. Confidence! (You've earned it.)
Confidence and calm self-assertion are (IM li'l ol' lady O) a good shield against this nonsense. Any kind of fuss lets them know they're getting to you, on one level or another. Don't let him mess with your self-perception.
Hugs from granny!6 -

It's not untrue; and, weirdly enough, it often seems to satisfy them and they walk away, thinking they have have accomplished whatever it was they were trying to do. (Of course, your bully/idiot/self-appointed-dispenser-of-questionable-wisdom may vary.)
