Viibryd / Welbutrin Weight gain

I’m currently on 300 mg of Welbutrin, 25mcg of Synthroid and just tapered to 20 mg of viibryd and I have gained 25lbs. Is anyone else having issues with these medications?? I know both medications are known to be weigh neutral but I cannot think of what else it could be. NOTE: I started the thyroid medication after the weight gain.

I’m tracking my food, eating a hypoallergenic diet, exercising 5-6 days a week but still cannot recognize myself in the mirror. Please weigh in if you’re having similar experiences with these medications!

Wellbutrin helped me lose, so it is likely the vibryd. I am BP2 and the Wellbutrin was carefully titrated but still often made me hypomanic so I had to drop it.

Is your thyroid dosage well-regulated yet? I've been on synthroid for a couple decades and whenever I get slightly out of balance on that I can gain/lose accidentally. It does take a few months (about three for me) for the dose to stabilize. When my numbers are stable, I gain and lose at the rate predicted by this site and other calculators.

I think it's really important for you to become an expert at logging your food and keep good records. Thyroid patients have ranges of medication/effectiveness and weight is one of those telling symptoms that is useful for dialing in optimal dose.

I've been on wellbutrin about 2-3 years now and have not noticed it making a bit of difference as far as gaining weight..actually my doctor prescribed me wellbutrin because it was the only depression medication that didnt have weight gain as a side effect. She said it actually helps most people lose weight

I was switched to Wellbutrin for the same reason.

I'm on wellbutrin as well and it helped me (mostly because of the mood stabilization and increased ability to focus). I didnt notice any gains.

Maybe there is something different in the way I metabolize Welbutrin because I was having issues losing weight without any of the other medications I mentioned.

I’m feeling pretty hopeless at this point. Every anti-depressant medication I’ve taken is effective for a few months but become ineffective with 6 months or so. I’ve been crazy diligent about nutrition/ exercise but see zero change.

I'm BP1 I'm going through the same thing pretty much except with Invega. The weight came on quickly but now that I've been eating right it's coming off but very slowly and sometimes my weight goes up before it goes down. Stick with it and hopefully things will improve. If not get your thyroid checked or get genesight testing done. More Drs are doing that now. I had it done and learned a lot about what meds I can tolerate without side effects. My psychiatrist did it for me.

Thank you for sharing, i was considering getting the genesight done. Do you feel it was worth the high price tag?

There are very few medications than can directly effect your weight. Some medications can cause an increase in appetite. Wellbutrin is not considered to be one of them.

My brother takes mood stabilizers and antipsychotics known to cause an increase in appetite. When he was in a hospital setting, he gained weight while eating hospital food and not getting much exercise. Now that he is home, eating Mom's cooking, helping her with extensive yard work, and walking several miles per day, he lost all the weight he gained in the hospital and has maintained a healthy weight for over three years.

He doesn't count calories. He does eat lots of whole foods - fruits, veggies, legumes, whole grains, etc. There's very little, if any, junk food in the house.

Weight loss is not linear, especially for women with menstrual cycles.
