@frenchen I have been eating Keto for four years now. Clearly that are non keto eaters that really do not like the idea of this Way Of Eating but like myself many on MFP are positive about their n=1 (their personal experience eat the Keto WOE) trial of eating less than 50 grams of carbs daily.
In my case my first 30 days was the hardest and the first year had it bumps.
I did it for general pain manage personally. It started working to decrease my 40 years of high pain levels in the first 30 days and I think that was key for me these last 1460 days of eating keto. While I have maintained a 50 pound weight loss for the past three years Keto has helped my general health markers improve year by year. 40 years of IBS went away in the first 180 days and has not returned. A1C last round of lab work came in at 5.1 and a fasting BG level of 92. I now can walk as long as I wish and some lost physical abilities have been recovered.
Personally I do not see the general public doing the Keto WOE just to lose weight. While I find it very easy and fun to do the Keto WOE the first two weeks was truly hellish but keep in mind I was 63 and very unhealthy plus carbs had a tight grasp on what I had put in my mouth the prior 40 years.
Four years later I am still learning so much because I do check out negative reports about this WOE but so far I have not found science that supports Keto will put me in an early grave.
In my case the inverse seems to be the case. It seems most people who stick with Keto for a year may more or less do keto for live. As with most successful WOE's they have to be done for life to keep any health gains found from a new Way of Eating.
Best of success. There are many WOE's beside Keto so if it does not work out for you long term try another WOE.10 -
Hello my name is Felecia I am 57yrs old and I’m new to the community. I have seen articles on Keto but I just don’t know how to start at all. I would be so grateful if you could just give me some ideas for breakfast lunch and dinner but I will say I’m not a big eater meat is not real important and I hate miracle whip and mayo2

@AuntBug1683 I found since the first requirement to start living in a state of Nutritional Ketosis is to keep daily carbohydrate intake down to about 50 grams daily that is a good place to start.
If one decides they will not cut carbohydrates down to around 50 grams a day then they can just rule out the Keto option and look for another Way Of Eating.
When on a hunch at the age of 63 for pain management I cold turkey cut out calorie sources that contained added sugar and or any form of any grain that put me on a start to a Low Carb High Fat WOE by default. After a hellish two weeks of going Low Carb my carb cravings started crashing then burned out. I had moved to using about 500-600 calories of coconut oil in my first cup of coffee each morning before I even learned about LCHF Way Of Eating.
Then I started to learn how many carbs were added in the form of sugars even in home cooked meals.
In other words there are not there are not are not Keto foods in one sense. I grew up eating coleslaw only to learn others add sugars so potluck meals are more or less out for me after getting kicked out of a state of Nutritional Ketosis many times over eating carbs that I did not think was in the food.
Keto is a balancing act. Say one eats the government figures of 2000 calories daily and say 1000 came from carbs. 50 grams of carbs daily is only 200 calories so typically one will add 800 calories from Fats. Keto is not viewed as a high protein WOE like the Atkins Diet, etc but there are many ways to do Keto but the 50 grams of carbs daily is a pretty solid cap rule for most.
I think most find Keto sucks for weight loss because they are not willing to go that low on carbs.
Since I went Keto to try and stabilize my failing health at the age of only 63 in Oct 2014 (experiencing awesome success health wise) I did lose some weight and have maintained a 50 pound loss for the last 3 years eating my Keto WOE and never going hungry like when I was cutting calories to lose weight for the prior 40 years.
Best of success working to find the WOE that gives you the best health as possible.

Hi I have been doing it for a month. It’s been somewhat easy to cut the carbs but I cannot say that I have had any weight loss. No weight gain which is a good sign but no weight loss. I bought the fittofattofit program but I think you can find most of what you need for free. Feel free to add me1

I go between Keto and Low Carb. I've been on it for 5 months. I've eliminated all sugar, starchy veggies and most fruit and all processed foods. I'm down 32 lbs. but have been stalled for almost a month now. I'm 68 so I'm losing at a slower place than you younger ones.0

I've been eating Keto for just a few weeks and it is working for me.
Of course there are pros and cons to all "diets", keto included.

My husband and I have been doing Keto since early August. I sought info on YouTube with Dr. Berry and a couple that have an informational site called KetoConnect. We’ve had great luck and doing it as a couple has made this work for us.

I started off with intermittent fasting back in mid January and adding Keto in June. Lost 30 lbs with intermittent fasting alone, but then stagnated. So, I added the Keto diet and lost another 20 lbs. So in total, went from a waist size 42 and I'm down to a 33/32. I found the keto diet to be easy to stick to since I do experience any FOMO for the most part, except for when it comes to cake (guess I'll always have fat kid cravings). But my experience with Keto has been great!2

I’m about a week into keto and honestly, the first two days were awful. I think I’m adjusting, but that could also be because I also have celiac disease and therefore have a gluten-free diet (so giving up certain things is just kind of what I’m used to). One thing I have noticed in just a short week is that I have not woken up with any headaches since the day I started. Headaches upon waking up were somewhat chronic and doctors didn’t really have any explanation. I’ve also noticed that because I’m eating healthier fats I stay fuller for longer and I’m not hungry before bed and I don’t wake up starving. In fact, after I wake up at 5 AM I don’t even really feel like I need to eat until closer to seven or eight. That is also something new for me. I’m sure down the road I will hit hurdles and bumps but so far, I’m feeling pretty good.5

Hi I am new to the Keto diet and have been struggling to determine how much fat & protein I should eat to lose. I am 5'4" weight 148 would like to get to 135 and maintain at that weight. I think I have been eating too much protein if anyone has a suggestion please let me know. Thank you Millie1

I've been Keto since January 14, 2018 - I have lost 70 pounds since my highest weight. I do a strict no sugars/no grains - and am definitely LCHF. I've relaxed a bit since hitting my mid-goal and now nothing is coming off! I highly recommend reddit.com/keto for beginners! They have everything you need.2

I dipped my toe in the Keto pool a month ago, but got really serious a week ago after doing research and purchasing the Keto friendly foods (flours, full fat foods, MCT oil). At first it was hard to wrap my head around high fat eating since low fat had been ingrained for years. After following 2FitDocs on YouTube and watching Dr. Keith lose weight, I decided to go in full force. I lost 4.6 pounds in my first 4 days, but have been up & down since then with a net loss of 3.2 pounds as of this morning. I just added MCT oil this morning, so we'll see what impact that has.

That initial big drop is mostly water weight. How many calories are you consuming each day? Calories are still the driving force for weight loss. How long have you been at the same weight?3 -
I've been trying to decide what sort of meal plan to jump on board with. Why do you all like keto? Have you seen weight loss or more muscle mass from it?0

@lesockie when I started Keto Oct 2014 it was not for weight loss or gain more muscle mass but to address my pain and mental fog concerns. With that said without thought or effort to loss weight I did lose weight and have maintained a 50 pound weight loss for over three years now eating the same Keto WOE that I ate when I was losing weight without trying. I think I have more muscle mass than 30 years ago but I was fat, skin and bones when I started the Keto WOE 4 years ago.
It turned out Keto is not hard to do I found IF one can get carbs down to 50 grams daily. I think at is where you can focus on your meal planning perhaps.

I am consuming 100 - 500 less than MFP recommends AFTER allowing for exercise. I've been hovering around the same weight (within 4 pounds) for 4 months. I did have a 10 day vacation in the middle of that, which didn't help.
I'm 5'3" - 159 pounds. I'd like to lose 20 more pounds.
