combat sodium retention?

G'afternoon, y'all. I'm in need of some advice. Tonight I'm having left over Chinese food for dinner. Steamed veggies and shrimp over white rice with a few spoons of brown sauce. My problem is that the brown sauce this time was EXTREMELY salty! After eating it the first night, my weight went up 2 pounds due to water retention. Well, tomorrow is my bi-annual check up, and I've lost 15 pounds since my spring check up... and I don't want to lose a few of those pounds to water retention. So I'm wondering how to combat this problem. Drink tons of water tonight (and be up all night hitting the bathroom)? Possibly watering down the brown sauce and adding a bit of XXX to help remove some salt? (Don't think I can cook this with a potato to draw out the sodium! lol) Drink a pot of green tea with dinner to help with the sodium? How would you combat this? Any suggestions seriously appreciated!

Unless there is something wrong with you, your body retains water because it's necessary. Rather than combat it, I'd just accept it. If you're unwilling to do that, maybe have something else for dinner?
You aren't "losing" anything if you weigh in a pound or two heavier tomorrow than usual. Water retention is a perfectly normal thing and our weight is always going up and down due to various factors.7 -

Your body retains water to deal with a high sodium meal for a reason, so I personally wouldn't mess with that to show a 15 lb loss rather than a 13 lb loss. Plus, different scales are calibrated differently, I never weigh the same on the doctor's scale as I do on my own so it's kind of a crapshoot what it will say anyway.
Maybe save the leftovers for tomorrow?4 -
Have something different for dinner, enjoy the leftovers tomorrow as a way to celebrate.2

Nothing wrong with sodium as long as you consume roughly the same amount on a day to day basis. Dietary indiscretions/huge fluctuations usually take around 3-5 days for the (normally functioning) kidneys to compensate to long term changes. Key point is consistency...0

Is your goal to have an impressive loss for tomorrow's checkup? Think of it like this: any loss that doesn't show for tomorrow's checkup due to water retention might show for the next checkup. You've already lost 15, and 13 is still impressive. Now that you're thinner, weight loss will be slower, so you will need those extra 2 pounds if you want your next checkup to look impressive.8

The better question may be whether this is the right place to get your food from. There is a huge convenience factor from eating out or ordering takeout but things like stir fries can be easily replicated at home where you can control how much sodium is in your food. I travel in my job and was eating regularly at a Chipotle's restaurant because it's considered healthy food. I went to their website to look up the nutrition content of what I had been ordering and I was consuming over 2700mg sodium at one meal, well above the recommended intake of 1500-2300mg. Life is a balancing act and you need to pick your battles. If you only eat Chinese occasionally it may not be a big deal but if it's a regular part of your diet you may want to consider ways to manage it.6
