How many steps in a mile?

My step tracker is telling me there are 2670 steps in one mile for me. Everywhere I research says 1700-2200....doesn’t 2670 sound high for a mile, even for someone short?

2220+ for me on average. I’m 5’4”.0

Depends on how short and what your stride length is, I should think. I'm 5'1" and it's about 2500 steps in a mile for me according to my Fitbit.1

They used to say a mile was 2,000 steps. Thats why the 10,000 steps is approximately 5 miles a day. However, everyone is not the same height or has the same size stride. So of you are smaller and have a smaller stride it may take you more steps to reach a mile. I wouldn't be overly concerned though, any activity is good activity. If you really want to know couldn't you use an app on your phone to track using your GPS to see if you walk a mile how many steps it actually is? I think that would probably be more accurate.4

Well there are 5280 feet in a mile and 2670 is a bit less than half that. Mark out 10 or 20 feet and see if your stride is about 24".7

A mile used to literally be 2,000 steps, before we had a better way to measure it. Mile from mille like millimeter, meaning thousand. A pace is a step with each leg, so a mile was literally a thousand paces.
The first person to figure out how big they earth was, was an ancient Egyptian. He realized that shadows fall at different angles in different places at noon. So he paid somebody to walk from one of them to the other, counting paces, to learn the distance between them. (Then it was some math.). Now we have GPS and mass produced measuring tapes.20 -
Sorry, maybe I got a little off track there. I'm fascinated by weird stuff.
Anyway, for me it's 1,700 to 1,800 steps depending on the day. I'm 6'1" and male.4 -
I am an old, short (5'3 1/2") woman & it takes about 12,050 steps for 5 miles on my Fitbit, so about 2,410 steps to a mile for me.3

I'm 5'9". 2150 step per mile.

I am 4'11 and according to my pedometer, I am around 2330 steps a mile. I must have a larger stride than other shorties here, that or there is inaccuracy with my settings!1

Female 5'1", about 2500 walking at 20 mpm on a treadmill, about 2200 running 11 mpm.0

I’m 5’4” and a mile is a little over 2400 steps for me.0

I’m 5’8” and for me it’s just over 21000

5'2", and my tracker says I average ~2400.0

As of right now I've done 2030 steps which is reading as 0.99mile I'm 5ft 80

Thanks everyone, I suppose it does really vary. The reason I asked is because I like to track my activity in miles, not steps. So I generally aim for 5 miles a day, but it takes me 13,350 steps to reach that!! It just sounded like a ton...I was thinking 13,350 steps would be close to 6.5-7 miles. I guess I was using the old 2000 steps formula...hmmmm0

Try some different apps; a few of them count steps from the gyro and distance from the gps so you can cross check. I usually don't bother converting. If I look at steps (I track them every day with Pacer on my phone, not linked to mfp), it's only because I did something where they will be way above normal. Then I subtract 6000 (I would subtract more if I didn't have my base calories set pretty low) double it and take hundreds as calories. Example - 12345 - 6000 = 6345. Doubled is 12690. Hundreds is 126. I log that many calories. Exact? No. It's reasonably close to 50 calories per mile, which is about right. And I do it in my head in far less time than it took to explain it.1

2050 for me...6'2"0

For me it depends on whether I'm walking or running. I take longer strides when running, so fewer steps per mile. Wandering around the house, I take small steps, so it takes a lot of steps to make a mile. Walking the dog, it depends on how often he stops and whether I'm walking on the street or on a rocky rooty trail.4

@2,200 steps per mile for me - 5'6", female.0

Depends on your activity and stride length. On my usual run, I cover five miles yet log fewer than 10k steps. If I’m walking on a steep hill and take smaller steps, then I’ll log fewer steps per mile than I would on a flat surface. That’s one reason why step counting isn’t a good measuring tool for everyone.3

Do you have an outside route you walk? Or a distance you can walk for a bit to get a fix on things?
You can use https://plotaroute.com/ to map out a measured mile near where you live, walk it, and clock your step count for the walk to give you an approximate idea how many steps it takes you to walk a mile.0 -
I always averaged about 2400 steps/mile when I was tracking steps . It seems to vary a lot form person to person.

I'm 5'8" and average right around 2,000.0

Thanks for the replies everyone! I actually did map out an exact mile to see how many steps it would take. It took 2183!1
