Definitely start slow, make small changes, I preferred to slowly cut back on calories instead of suddenly but everyone’s different.
For me I found cheat days once a week really helped me stay on track. That doesn’t mean I go crazy I just use that day to indulge in a craving and let loose a bit. Obviously that only works for some people!
Drink lots of water and try to eat vegetables with every meal! That’s what’s worked for me!

The health and fitness industry makes their money by complicating a simple process so like you many don't know where to start. Here it is in simple terms

    1. Use the app to get your calorie target
    2. Eat food you enjoy and use the app to make sure you're eating those foods in amounts that meet your calorie target
    3. Repeat Step 2 every day

That's it. That's where you start. From there you'll learn and get better at this and you'll be able to make changes and adjustments that will make this process even easier, but for now. Do step 1 then keep doing step 2.

    G'luck

Use a food scale to weigh your foods, and double check entries on the database. Meet your calorie goal. Trust in the process. It works

It's true that the diet industry tries to make it look like there's a magic path to normal weight. The truth is really very simple. There's no magic. You have to find what works for you. I started slow with exercise (walking 4,000 steps) and used the MFP suggested calories and lost all the weight I wanted to. I am now at a healthy weight. If I could say anything to a new participant it would be find what works for you and take your time. After two years of dieting I had a new understanding of how to eat and could no longer overeat because over time I had learned to cut my portions drastically and had removed the really high calorie foods. Where I would have eaten 4 tacos for dinner with gobs of cheese now I eat two with a sprinkling of cheese and lots of shredded cabbage. I'm full now with that portion. I didn't arrive there in a month. It took a while but now I can't eat four tacos without feeling sick after. Go slow and you'll get there and most importantly you will STAY THERE.
