Walked before breakfast and after dinner, when I was freight weight heavy (early 2012 in LA before November when I'd finally taken the advise of distant relatives/friends/peers to join myfitnesspal), duration-focused (4 hours in the AM, 4 hours in the PM), along a planned route which included:
* Please know, that the duration was long initially, due to the fact, that I would have to stop our walk, to take a break to catch my breath, eat some of my mixed nuts and dried fruits snack and hydrate, after every 5 steps. Later, once I didn't need to pause as often, we both enjoyed the time out lol It became therapeutic.- Long and flat
- Steep hills primarily for cyclists with pretty serious incline %s
- Different stairs within our CBD from Old Town to our Commercial Office Buildings row
The duration was shocking then and even now, however at the time, with members of the community closely watching the progress with multiple weigh-ins (twice a day) with a stand-in audience of one or 2 other people plus the high stress level ("work and life"), the workout served its purpose - a relief, space to breath. Working out with my sister @777Gemma888 day in, day out, irrespective of the climes and holidays or unavoidable events, we both banked our time. Some members of our neighbourhood whose expertise were relevant ("medical specialists") also kept a close watch, running parts of our distance in the AM and the PM and would even stop traffic, for us to cross, for I couldn't make it across within the allocated duration for normal crossings.
I dropped weight and evaded issues I'd assumed I'd need to deal with. Well before mid 2013, you wouldn't even think that I was near 400 lbs around mid-November, the previous year. My circumstances at the time however, catapulted the result. Sometime between early to mid 2013, we'd switched to road-running plus strength training.11 -
Started on 170 kg - 375 pounds in March 2018 and could barely walk. Joined MFP, listened to their advise and slowly changed to a healthier life style. By now I am about 25 kg down and can walk 2 hours a day. Slowly, but that will improve in time. On average I walk every second day or so. I stick to my daily calorie allotment as per MFP, around 1750 calories a day - sometimes a little bit more, sometimes a little bit less. Once I will fit into / onto the machines at the gym, I will visit them once a week or so. Love swimming and water aerobics, looking forward to that soon. By now I understand that it's not a race but a long term commitment with my weight. I take it meal by meal, day by day - prepare a basic meal plan the day before and try to stick to it. Evenings out, daughter's baking efforts (!!!!!) etc. need to be considered as well, but overall I am doing just fine.11

It's not the walking that makes people lose weight, it's the calorie deficit.
Walking like all other exercise is good for health and can help you maintain the deficit.
You can lose weight without doing any exercise at all.15 -
Although losing weight is a math game (CICO) and the bigger impact on this is the food you eat, exercise can help keep you going by feeling good about yourself after you’ve worked out. It can drive you to continue playing the long game.6

As others have said before me, the only thing that matters for weight loss is a calorie deficit. How you achieve that is entirely up to you. That being said, I'm not big on exercise, so I only walk. If the weather is good enough, around 7-10 km per day, at a very moderate pace. At the moments it's less than that because it gets dark too early, and I hate walking on the streets to get my kilometers in.3

I did. 2-5 miles a day for around 5 months. Lost about .5 pounds a week. Walked 7 days a week.4

I walk every day during my lunch break for an hour in addition to my regular workout before or after work. However even with exercising twice a day, I never lost weight until I started logging all my food regularly here.12

Weight loss is all about calorie deficit. It's very possible to lose weight without exercise at all, as long as you are eating at a deficit. Likewise, you can also maintain or gain even if you are doing major exercise, if you are not watching what you eat.
Walking will be good because it will burn calories on the days you walk, which will allow you to eat more without going over your goal. Exercise is also important for overall health, and walking will meet that need for you. But the bulk of your weight loss success will come from what you eat, not the workouts you do.7 -
I did 90% walking my first year, lost a bit over 100lbs but that was in a pretty severe calorie deficit. You don't have to exercise at all to lose weight, but it helps to keep the calories up so you aren't starving all the time. If you've decided that in order to create your calorie deficit you're going to use walking, then go for it. Too many people think they have to 'lift heavy' or do hours of cardio on a boring machine in order to lose weight. All you have to do is create a calorie deficit. How you do that is up to you.5

My first 3 pregnancies I walked on my treadmill and lost 120lbs twice and 70lbs the last one just walking. My 4th pregnancy I have been struggling for 6 yrs but just bought a new treadmill so I don't miss a workout. I am down 20lbs just walking at the gym and cutting calories. Log your calories, if you over eat then walk those calories away, and don't give up..the last 6 yrs I have battled health issues so I had to work on that then losing weight but I am walking.4

I have found that walking one hour a day five days a week is a good “tool” to have and use in my weight loss tool chest. It is time consuming but very effective.
Having sai that, it’s supplemental for me as my primary tools are KB training, burpees and occasional running.1 -
When I started losing weight walking was all I did - to and from work (15 mins each way) then 1/2 hour at lunchtime. I would eat back my exercise calories mostly, or save some for the weekend. The important thing is being accurate with logging - not over-estimating your walking speed, and weighing/measuring all your food and drink. You can lose weight just walking as long as you maintain a calorie deficit. Once you have lost some weight you may want to introduce other exercise - I added in some moderate exercise DVDs (20 mins or so at a time) then discovered Zumba (massive calorie burn - love it!). But I still keep walking in the repertoire2

I lost 66lbs with calorie counting and walking 10k steps per day.
I'm 5'7, SW: 211 and CW: 145.
My GW is 135, so almost there.
It took me about a year to get there.
Walking worked great for me, because I listen to music or podcasts and just walk and walk and walk. Very Relaxing and it also helped me through periods of depression and anxiety.
