Fruits and Sugar

I'm new to this site, so I'm still trying to get a good feel for what foods will help me meet my daily goals. For sugar, my daily goal is 34 grams. I just ate steel cut oats and put roughly 1/2 serving of raisins in my oatmeal. These raisons are 15 grams of sugar... for 1/2 serving. This is almost 1/2 of my daily goal for sugar.

We encourage our kids to eat fresh fruit, but I can't imagine, how much sugar are they getting?

fresh fruits contain natural sugars which are broken down more effectively than refined sugars. Tropical fruits are higher in sugar but it's still better to grab a banana than a muffin.

the sugar we get from fruits is much healthier than the sugar we get from candy.. think of it that way. i eat a lot of fruits, and tend to go over on my sugar goal for the day. i don't sweat it, because i know that fruits benefit my diet in many other ways.

Hi, I visited a nutritionist yesterday who told me I was consuming too much fruit as a result of my effort to eat healthier. Her suggestion, substitute some of the servings of fruit with vegetables -- celery and carrots perhaps with hummus, cukes etc. I know vegetables aren't an option for the oats but you can substitute fruit with veggies at other times when it makes sense.

I eat extremely large quantities of fruit on most days. In fact, it's a staple in my overall diet.

Fruit is good in that it has fiber but it does have sugar - natural, not refined, but still sugar. Like anything, too much of something is not good for you. The nutritionist said we should strive for variety, balance and portion control. I've been having a field day with fruit this summer, eating lots of cherries, strawberries, grapes, plums, nectarines, peaches, grapefruit, raisins, craisins, apples, bananas, cantaloupe, and watermelon, with a fruit smoothie for breakfast 4 out of 7 days/week. I was so proud of myself that I would reach for fruit every time I got hungry and I stay hungry! Imagine my surprise when she told me I needed to reduce the fruit and eat more veggies because on average a serving of vegetables was about 25 calories where a serving of fruit about 60, because of the sugar. Some of us may have to watch more than calories and things like sugar, sodium, saturated fats etc. may also be things we need to watch how much we consume on a daily basis.

    I hope this helps.
