Tips for Curbing Hunger

Hi! I recently was on vacation and unfortunately gained about 5 lbs while away. Now that I’m back and need to get into routine I find I’m already starving more than normal, probably because my body was used to being fed so much. Does anyone have tips to help with hunger while cutting calories?

How many calories are you allowing yourself per day now that you're back? How long ago was your vacation?

According to this app, I’m going to try with 1,270 calories per day. And I got back yesterday from vacation haha. But I was gone for 2 1/2 weeks. But just from eating “normally” yesterday but higher than 1,270, I was hungry most of the day, so I know it’s going to be a struggle just getting back to a normal routine.

I drink hot chamomile tea or carbonated water.

Did you fly there and back? Reason I'm asking is flying can add *temporary water weight gain* that has nothing to do with actual fat gain and should dissipate within a few days.

Also, how much weight loss per week did you set the app here to calculate? How tall are you and what's your current weight and goal weight?

Protein helps but don’t neglect the good fats. Fat can also help with satiety. I personally go with 0.5g of fat per pound of bodyweight. I also stay away from fast digesting carbs because I get hungry a lot faster than if I eat slow digesting carbs. I don’t react well to grains so I don’t eat them at all. You have to find how you react to certain foods and listen to your body.

Increasing protein and fiber. Also, drinking lots of fluids can help.

I did fly there and back (8 hour plane ride). App is set to lose 1 lb per week. I’m 5’1 and currently 142.2 and goal weight 125 (which is still kind of high for my height I think).

I would give yourself a week or so to settle back home before focusing on weight because of the flying water weight issue - 10lbs is actually not surprising for a long flight) - plus when you consider that you potentially ate foods higher in sodium etc while on vacation - I doubt that you ate 33,000 over your maintenance calories over the 2 weeks (which would amount to 2000+ over maintenance each day)

Give it a few days, then, for the excess water weight to dissipate. You might be pleasantly surprised to find you didn't do as much 'damage' as you may have thought, even though, in the larger picture, 5 lbs is really minor. Keep in mind that for women our weight can also easily increase by 5 lbs or more depending on where you are in your monthly cycle. It, too, will disappear since it has nothing to do with actual fat gain. ;)

Most importantly, I trust you had a great vacation and if it *did* end up costing you a measly 5 lbs, it would be *so* worth it in my books. <3

I don't try to curb hunger. I just tolerate it. I know I'm getting enough to eat over all so malnutrition or starvation is not an issue, thank God. If I feel hungry it's only because my stomach has emptied out from the previous meal. This is a natural state.

I eat more proteins and fats, fewer carbs (especially refined and highly processed), get more salt and water, and give it a couple of days. For me, if I am hungry past a couple of days, it means my food choices have not been ideal for me.

Trader Joe's blueberry fiber cakes, sold next to delicious muffins and scones that I refuse to see, with a large mug of black coffee  80 calories, 12 grams of fiber, very filling!
