If the carbs you eat on a regular diet are used for energy, then, if you eat fat on keto, the body uses the fat you eat for energy? If so, how do you lose existing fat? I'm missing something...

In both cases, you also eat at a deficit, so you need more energy than what you eat, and that's why -- in both cases - you also burn body fat.13

There's a lot of woo out there, but the real answer is (1) it's not any better than any other way of keeping a deficit (we all burn fat), but (2) some people find that they feel less hungry or more satisfied on keto (or other forms of low carb) and so keep calories down easier, or in some cases without counting them.
I think part of this is that it's reasonably restrictive so some cut out the foods they were most likely to overeat too.
People vary on how much they are also able to overeat foods high in fat and/or protein (I personally can very easily), and how much keto or low carbing helps with appetite.
I quite like low carbing, so this isn't a negative about that way of eating, or keto which works well for some.12 -

@MDC2957 that is a good question and I had the same one 4 years ago when I cut out food containing added sugar and or any form of any grain at the age of 63 to try and maintain my mobility.
Not sure why it has worked out in my case but health is much better at the age of 67 and without cutting calories eaten I lost 50 pounds without try and have maintained that loss for three years now eating the same way when I lost the 50 pounds.
Read up on the biological response differences between fueling the body with glucose vs. mainly ketones. It really is more than just a carb vs fat weight loss thing because results vary from person to person or even the same person over time.
The microbes in our gut ratios can vary on different Ways Of Eating. Different diseases respond differently to different WOE's, etc.

Simple... eat more fat, fat oxidation increases and carb oxidation decreases. Eat more carbs and carb oxidation increases and fat oxidation decreases. Does that matter? No. What matters is the combination of both in comparison of net storage.14

Well, it is good for burning fat, if that's that the most readily available energy source because it's mostly what you're eating. The missing piece is exactly what you've pointed out, the conflation of current fat consumption with stored fat. You won't lose weight just because your energy is coming from the fat you ate today if you're also eating so many calories that you're increasing your stored fat.

So if it is true that they can use fat better or more efficiently, they would oxidize less fat, not more, than others at the same level of calorie deficit who are not fat-adapted.14 -

A number of adaptations occur in the body subject to reduced carbohydrate intake, called ketosis. These adaptations shift the body from consuming primarily glucose to primarily free fatty acids (FFA) and serve primarily to conserve glucose and nitrogen. (Lyle McDonald, The Ketogenic Diet, p.39). Briefly,
Because the brain is incapable of using FFA for fuel, the body produces ketones from FFA, which the brain will readily use to derive up to 75% of its total energy requirements from ketones. (L. McDonald, op cit., p. 21)
By the third day of ketosis, all of the non-protein fuel is derived from the oxidation of FFA

As ketosis develops, most tissues which can use ketones for fuel will stop using them to a significant degree by the third week. As ketosis develops, an adaptation in the kidney to prevent excessive nitrogen loss as ammonia in the urine in order to spare protein. As blood ketone concentrations increase, the kidney increases its absorption of
ketones. If this increased absorption was accompanied by increased ketone excretion, there would be further nitrogen loss through ammonia production. However urinary excretion of ketones does not increase, staying extremely constant from the first few days of ketosis on. Therefore, most of the ketones being absorbed by the kidney are not being excreted. The resorption of ketones appears to be an adaptation to prevent further
nitrogen losses, which would occur from increasing ammonia synthesis (L. McDonald, op cit. 47).
Within days of starting a ketogenic diet, thyroid hormone T3 drops quickly. This is part of the adaptation to prevent protein losses and the addition of synthetic T3 increases nitrogen losses during a ketogenic diet (L. McDonald, op cit. 49).
In sum, the body will adapt to carbohydrate sparsity by three major adaptations: (i) shifting the sourcing of the body's energy needs from carbohydrate consumption to FFA consumption; (ii) producing Ketones for the brain; (iii) conserving glucose by recycling pyruvate for leukocytes, erythrocytes and bone marrow; (iv) reducing protein consumption by producing glucose from triglycerides; (v) increasing uptake of ketone in the kidneys to spare nitrogen loss; (vi) conserving ketones for the brain's consumption by shifting sourcing of muscles' energy needs from ketone to FFA; and (vii) conserving protein requirements by down regulating production of thyroid hormones.

If you are using fat "more efficiently," it would mean you need to use less of it to accomplish a given amount of work ("work" in the mechanical sense, which includes exercise). I guess I was not clear on what I meant. Someone who is fat adapted can access more fat, at higher intensities of exercise, relying very little on glycogen and glucose which is often depleted before fat is. Because fat adapted people can access fat better as fuel, they tend to avoid hitting the wall like someone who is more glucose and glycogen reliant.3 -

Just about everybody who says a diet other than moderation may have a benefit, of any sort at all whether science supports it or not, will end up with woo stalkers. Even if you just say it works for you, or you like it, you'll get woo'ed. It's best to ignore it.2 -

But what you are missing is that the appetite suppressant thing does not happen for everyone with keto, and typically happens for many with non keto levels of low carb. It has nothing to do with some supposed fat burning advantage (which does not exist). I mentioned the possible help with hunger in one of the earliest posts in the thread, also.
Being able to burn fat more efficiently for exercise is not related to what the OP is talking about, I don't think, and not relevant to most, but also tends to be something that improves based on related training (even people who aren't low carb can improve it by running fasted and including it in their training, and if you don't exercise there's no magical effect where you can run and run at an intense level and not hit the wall -- indeed, even low carb athletes can hit the wall when exercising at any level of intensity, which is why it's common for them to also use carbs in exercise -- but again not really relevant to OP's question, IMO).5
