I am a mad keen hiker, it's why I live where I do. Hiking made me appreciate my place in the ecosystem and contributed to me becoming a bird watcher....so I guess there's a warning for all!0

Large bill from state for rescue costs.
Rescues are always free in Washington and may be where you live too. Search and Rescue is almost entirely volunteers. When people hesitate to call for help (because they don't want to get a bill) the situation tends to get worse, and is more dangerous for rescuers when they're finally called in. Even the helicopter ride is free here. When the SAR bird is busy or can't fly, the Navy provides air transport and writes it off as training.2
