Quit Day

I have not had a cigarette since April 2012. After almost 30 years of smoking. I still have an unopened pack in my desk drawer, that was my psychological crutch just knowing they were there "in case". I had stopped before, but not for this length of time, so I think I might be able to be in the "former smoker" category.
Mine was sort of a cold turkey thing, had been in the hospital for 3 days, and figured I was already half way through that first miserable week, and stuck with it. Marked the calendar everyday with how much money I saved that day, and a running total. That alone was very motivating.
And get this, I did it during a high stress point in my life, husband asked for a divorce was the topper.
You can do this.
I'm proud of you.1 -
Good luck!
I quit a 24 yr smoking habit in 1999 with the help of Zyban, which you start taking a few weeks before you quit. The med made me super nauseous which kinda helped with quitting (that wasn't the intent but it worked anyway).
I read a book about quitting around that time (Cancer Society, maybe?) which had a number of helpful tips. Drink lots of water. If you have a craving for a cigarette, brush your teeth instead. Find something like needlework or knitting to do with your hands. I've also heard save some butts and ash in a jar with water, and taking a big sniff if you ever feel like giving in.
On my breaks at work I ended up walking around, I kept going to this gift store nearby that sold scented candles and smelling candles. That seemed to help.1 -

I heard the jar with butts in it too. Think I’ll try that0 -

Because my birthday is January 20th and I will be going out of town with a bunch of gal pals that smoke that weekend. I do not need that much temptation around when I’m a fresh non smoker. So I’ll wait till after I get home. Plus gives me time to get used to the idea5 -
Here to cheer you on!
You can do it and if you slip up, just try again...thats all you have to do, start again1 -
The best of luck to you 🙂1

I didn't even know people smoke cigarettes anymore. I mean outside of Japan and Eastern Europe.
Where do you live that you think this? Smoking still occurs in the United States of America. What makes you think only Japanese and Eastern European people are the only ones that still smoke?5 -
I have smoked on and off for the past 19 years .. I decided it was time and have not had a cigarette in 14 days (not long I know but small victory for me!)
I was embarrassed when people would smell it on me so always travels with a mini febreeze and altoids.
My mood swings are rough but manageable and I haven’t noticed any weight gain (so that’s good)!
You can do this and looks like you have a great plan !!!
Best of luck !5 -

Assuming you are partially on mfp for weight loss or gain weight or just track your calories, whatever it may be. I would suggest using nicotine patches or gum once Jan 22nd rls around.
Nicotine gets a bad reputation because of it being in tobacco products but there is benefits as the drug alone. There is some research into its effects on the brain and using it as a drug for various brain related issues.
One benefit it's a good appetite suppressant. Weight gain is very common when people give up smoking because they an increase in appetite that they didn't have before. Plus I imagine the withdrawal from it once you quit is terrible. I'd just wean myself using the patches or gum if it were me.

Yay! I’m proud of you!
Suggestion: read the book The Easy Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. Every smoker i know who has read that book has quit for good. Its like $3 on ebay.
Also I’ve heard good things about Wellbutrin for smoking cessation. If you talk to a dr now, you could get to effective levels by the 22nd. It goes by a different name when used for smoking cessation but I don’t remember it offhand. Edited to add: taking this pill helps to counteract the tendency to gain weight as a result of quitting too.4 -

This place rocks. I have started to cut back on the number of cigs I have and am keeping a log. But this thread is very helpful for me. So thanks everyone6 -
Best of luck to you. I was a die hard smoker and I was able to quit. My advice is when you get the urge, quickly find something else to do. The more mental challenging the task you find to do, the better. Good luck J!1

Quit about 10 years ago.
Son's GF left a pack of Newports at my house, I looked at them for days and finally broke. That was 2 years ago.
Back to occasional smoking. At the worst a pack a week, not many but not good.
I stopped again New Years.
A pack here cost about $11 so I got a jar at Dollar Tree and once a week I'm throwing in $10. I like the visual of how much it was costing me and the perk of saving the money.2 -

That makes sense. I once had a colleague who only smoked cigarettes in topless bars. I didn't want to be around when he smoked cigars.1 -
Good luck .
