I had never heard of this until my doctor suggested it to me as I seem to do it. Has anyone else had a problem with it and if you have, any suggestions to stop yourself? I mean other than saying to cut down on stress :)

Keep some healthier alternatives on hand...things that are low in sugar, high in protein and fiber. Atkins makes a variety of bars that might be able to help you.
  • Stress eating is why I had get in gear this year. After the first of the year, I was the heaviest I had ever been. My husband started his 5th year without permanent employment and no prospects, he was diagnosed with yet more health issues, my daughter became a teenager, we got hit with major car repair bills. It just kept piling up and I just kept eating. I think I felt like that was the one thing in my life I had control over and I was going to enjoy myself.

Of course, 53 pounds and a lot of hard work later, I still have this tendency, but when I feel stressed, I now go exercise. It really does work. My treadmill has a small flatscreen tv in it and it completely takes my mind away and gets all the pent up anger/energy out.

It's tough, but you can get through those urges. Good luck.

I think stress is a trigger for a lot of us folks here on MFP. Sometimes you don't even realize you're shoving stuff in your mouth and you definitely don't think what it is or how much of it there is. Food is often a comfort, an old friend. It brings back feelings of security and calm.

To avoid stress eating when minimizing stress isn't possible, I keep tons of crunchy healthy snacks like broccoli and carrots close at hand as well as Gerber Graduates banana cereal puffs (25 calories for 1/2 cup). And I drink lots of water and walk out frustrations or beat hell out of the heavy bag.
