Do They Not Sell This Stuff In Canada???

Hey everyone! I bought the Hungry Girl 300 under 300 cook book the other day and have had problems finding certain things in Canada. For example, diet hot chocolate with 25 calories. All I can find is 45 calorie stuff. Fat free mayo? There wasn't any in the 3 stores I looked at. Fat free cheddar cheese? Only PC Blue menu half the fat or something like that. Am I going to need to go stateside to get these items or are they hiding and I'm just not looking in the right places?

Check safeway.. they carry a lot of stuff most grocers don't normally carry. I couldn't find the tofu shiritaki noodles anywhere til I checked safeway in the next town over. You can use low fat or reduced fat too. Shouldn't change the calorie or fat content by a whole lot, if you really want to make her recipes that badly you might have to do it that way.0

well, my experience at a large grocery store chain here in Austin (Texas) is that the stores on the upscale part of town have a larger selection of healthier options for all products. Over here by my office (poor side of town) not so much. This grocery store doesn't even have baked lay's potato chips and I thought those were everywhere! Not sure how this compares to Canada, but maybe try a store in a different part of town? Or, if you are in a small town, you might have to go to a larger city to get more selection.0

Just because it says fat free -- often times means that it has higher calories, sodium or other things you dont want. Find an alternative that works for you...although it may not be an exact match it will still work. Good luck.0

Miracle whip has a fat free version but that's not a "real" mayo... Not sure about hot chocolate but I've never seen fat free cheese, except the processed slices type. I noticed when at the walmart and Hannafords in Bangor, Maine that those damn Americans not only have better prices And brands for fashion type shopping, but better options for low fat grocery shopping too!! Damn them!0

If it makes you feel any beter - you're not missing much (IMO). The 25 calorie hot chocolate tastes ok, but looks really strange. You can mix & mix & mix.... but it still doesn't looked mixed (if that makes any sense). Stuff just kinda suspends there.
Fat free cheese ?? Not horrible tasting, but 2% cheese is much better. 2% actually melts.
Fat free mayo - blech. Since mayo is mostly fat anyway - what's in fat free mayo? I tried to mix it in tuna salad, it added moisture, but the dressing kinda disappeared (hmm?)0 -
Fat free cheddar cheese?0

shirtaki noodles, only at safeway. Diet swiss miss, US only. Brummel & Brown US only... laughing cow other than plain, very rare in Canada.0

I'm not in Canada, but if you can't find the stuff, you might need to substitute. Well you found the 45 calorie hot chocolate so use that. Honestly, fat free cheese isn't worth it. It tastes like card board. I'd opt for reduced fat. You can easily compare the nutritionals of what you have with what is in the recipe by searching the MFP database. Then write any differences into the cookbook.0 -
lol thank you all for your answers. I guess you're right...I might not want to find the alternatives. For those that replied Safeway, there isn't one here unfortunately, the closest large city to me (London) doesn't have one either. I live on a border city, so going stateside isn't a huge deal....but I will absolutely make do with what I was able to find here0
