Ok...I know someone will tell me how horrible I am, but I HATE working out!

I do it because I have to, and no other reason. I have never found anything I enjoy about it, I dred going to the gym everyday and it DOES NOT give me enegy (I can't stand when people say that).

I give myself rewards and such, but I think that my lack of enjoyment about it is one of the reasons I can't shed the 15 pounds I have gained since I got married a year ago. I'm not sure, but I know I don't push myself as hard as I should, and I think its because I can't waitt o get out of there and go sit on my couch!

Does anyone else feel this way??? Am I the ONLY one in the world who just doesn't like it?

OK, my rant is over.

Can't stand it. I used to horseride competitively and own two, which never felt like exercise, but since I stopped (and I can't take it back up, due to a lack of time and money and a back injury) I've got nothing I enjoy exercise wise. I just force myself to do it 2 or 3 times a week and try and walk everywhere and keep my calories low. So no, you are definately NOT alone

It is not my FAVORITE thing to do. I just keep telling myself when I see the results it will all be worth while. Meanwhile when I am there I try to watch something on T.V. that I like because when I am at home I never have time for that.

    Good Luck

I can't say I love exercise, BUT, I know it is a must. It is the only way for me to reduce my weight. I have tried everything. Everyday I have to talk myself that it is good for me.

    You are not alone.

I'm sure you are not the only one!

I'm not a particular fan of the gym either. I'd rather be outside in the fresh air.
This is why I limit my time in the gym to 2 days a week to work on my strength training.
The 3 days out of the week I either run, walk, or bike outside, unless of course the weather doesn't allow it, then I usually hit the gym for a little while to do something aerobic.

You need to find what you enjoy. If you don't like the gym, then probably you are not getting the most out of it. Maybe some home work-out videos will work better for you...
Try different things and then come up with a plan of what you like to do.

  • I hate it too. I absolutely despise going to the gym or running around outside. I feel as if it has absolutely no purpose. Now playing a sport or something similar, I could get into. Then you are actually aiming for a goal and doing something worth while. Unfortunately, there are not many ways to get into sports unless you try out for a team which I can definitely not do. Plus, I do not have the time for something like that.

I can't say I always love working out, but you've got to find something you enjoy. I, for example, hate the elliptical. No matter how long I use it, I can never get to the point where I don't feel like I am absolutely going to die from exhaustion, and therefore cannot stand it. So if I forced myself to work out using an elliptical machine all the time, I would hate it too and not want to do it.

What kinds of things do you enjoy when you're not "working out". Can any of it be incorporated into working out? As long as it's not something that can be counted as everyday activity level, you can even count a good housecleaning as a work out as long as you are pretty active doing it (ie, walking from room to room, up and down stairs, scrubbing, etc).

Also, I think it is a common misconception that for work outs to be successful, they need to be long, strenuous and difficult. My work outs for example is walking and riding a bike. Once the weather gets nice I will start walking on my lunch breaks again. I love it.....after sitting in a boring office all day, it's great to get out in the fresh air and be away from my desk....pop in my ipod and I just have this 30 minutes of "alone" time to just clear my head and enjoy the outdoors. A 30 minute walk can be very enjoyable and for a long time it was my only exercise and I still lost a pound a week, feel like I am in much better shape and have seen it first hand in my shin splints going away as I got stronger and not getting as winded and can keep up with others when walking a long ways.

What about bike riding? Last summer I bought a fairly cheap bike at Target and started going on 20 - 45 minute bike rides. Add in a route that has a few hills (even without the hills it's an awesome workout) and you've got a great, fun, inexpensive way to work out. This winter I bought a bike trainer (80 bucks on amazon) so I can ride my bike indoors. It's not as fun and I have to really force myself to use it, but again using my Ipod or watching TV makes it not so bad.

What about rollerblading, or just turning on your favorite music and dance like crazy...it will burn a lot of calories. Just find what works for you, and remember that no matter how small or how low intensity your workout is, every bit of movement helps and eventually you can build up to be faster, stronger, and healthier.
  • You are the former version of myself! I'm 29 years old and up until about a year and a half ago I tried doing about every exercise under the moon, only to get bored with it, HATE it, and quit. In November of 2007 my best friend kept ranting about Jazzerice classes. It's a 60 minute workout (40 minutes of fun cardio, 20 minutes of strength training). I finally gave in and signed up. I've been doing it religiously ever since and was SOO surprised to find out that I actually look forward to going each day! This has NEVER happened to me! I think what I like best is that I found a workout that's different everyday. That's what keeps me coming back for more! I HATE gyms..I get SOOOO bored, distracted, and almost get a feeling of being just plain lost in there. If that makes sense. I've also found that bicycling outdoors has sparked my interest, but still not quite as much as Jazzercise classes. The moral of the story is to find something that works for you, whether it be a class (I like structure of a class), or trying a change in scenery and going outdoors. Good luck!

The main thing is to get moving. That does not mean exercise per se. Find a hobby you might like...walk a dog, go for a walk, learn to box, belly dance, any type of dancing, playing basketball, volleyball, skateboard, rollerskate, raquetball, tennis....all these things count as "exercise."

Honestly, the more you exercise, the more you want to exercise. Really try different things - you may be surprised. Unfortunately, there is very little wiggle room with regard to health and weight loss...you have to move.

There are certain exercises that I hate. I won't run....just hate it. I don't like really high intensity cardio. However, there are some forms that I just love and I feel like crap if I don't do it. I love swimming, walking, the elliptical and yoga. And, at least twice a week I take a cardio dance class, which I adore. It's soooooo much fun.

Find something you like and it doesn't have to be high intensity, sweaty and uncomfortable. There's no reason why a good brisk walk won't work just as well as jogging. In fact, it's better as it's easier on your joints.

If it's possible, try what my mom does -

She uses her elliptical, but she does it in 10 minute intervals so it doesn't seem so bad. She'll do 10 minutes, throw in a load of laundry, fold a basket of laundry, and come back for another 10 minutes...until she's accumulated 30 minutes.

    You can try watching TV

    Music

Or even reading if you have one of those things that go over the edge of the machine and hold your book open. That works for me when I'm not feeling motivated!

Who says you have to go to the gym? Why not take dancing lessons or go swimming or take up martial arts??? Take the dog for a run....the possibilities are endless

Exercise is not just about being at the gym. It is about moving your butt and raising your heart rate

I go to the gym with my husband and I do feel good after it, but I love swimming and I burn more calories doing it because I could swim all day.

The benefit from going to the gym is checking out the eye candy there! Always a bonus to see a muscular man pumping up his guns!!
  • Personally, I love to exercise. I live for it. Everyday I wake up looking forward to my workout.

Here's a question for you. What do you hate more? Working out? Or those 15lbs you want to get rid of?

Just get moving! Find different things until you find something you enjoy doing.

Personally I like to excersice but I do have frumpy days where I dont put as much motivation into it...I like it mainly because of the feeling I get afterwards from achieving my goals.:drinker:
  • I completely understand hating to work out, because I do too!!! I have never been athletically inclined (I was a cheerleader, but I couldn't do all the flips that went with it). I have been struggling with finding something to do physically that can keep my interest. I have almost every workout video under the sun because I do something for about 2 ot 3 weeks and then I'm ready to move on!!! Its very frustrating. :grumble: What I have started doing is walking at work for about 25 min. Its still boring but I'm getting some movement in. I bought a pedometer and set a step goal and the walk I take at work helps me meet my goal, so that kind of motivates me to get up and walk.

I am looking for a sport or another activity that I can take up to get in my exercise so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I would like to do something with my nieces, they are 9 and 5. Plus, I could use some suggestions on toning my arms. I have a wedding that I'm in in June and ofcourse the dress I have to wear is strapless  !!

I absolutely HATE cardio!!!! I would rather do three hours of weight training than do fifteen minutes of cardio. I only do it because I spent the money on the videos! Lol.

I know how you feel completely. When I don't want to do it anymore or I think, "whats the point, it makes me miserable?" I just find all the things that motivated me to start in the first place. Looking good for my fiance... Not having any self confidence is having a big impact on our relationship. Having to put on a bathing suit in a few short months... Yuck. I just keep thinking of things until I'm like, Okay, clearly my body and my sanity needs this 30 minute workout. I push through it and in the end I feel better all around.

Good luck on finding something to motivate you into your workouts!
