I am keto primarily for migraine control. My weight is quite maintainable on keto unless I drop calories accordingly. So make sure your calories are properly calculated and you are weighing your food. I still have a good 20lbs to lose but I needed to practice just staying on course for a while first. My doc is now happy with where my med levels are and tells me I can think about slowly trying to lose again.8

I did keto for about a year, and recently added back in a moderate amount of healthy carbs (like oatmeal and sweet potatoes, quinoa, fruit.)
I only had about 10 lbs to lose, and lost them in 2 months, then maintained the weight loss. Right after the holidays/a vacation in January, I cheated a bit, gained a few lbs. back, and now am following a plan that offers a bit more variety. I think the cheating made me realize I missed fruit. I've since lost the few lbs. I gained back and am happy with this way of eating.
That being said, I found keto to be a pretty good strategy for weight loss and maintenance. It's absolutely NOT the only way to lose weight, but particularly if your issues are satiety and you have some difficulty tracking calories/portions, it's a good way to be satisfied within a reduced calorie count. I would go on it again and still eat a lot of the same foods, just a bit less of them to make room for the quinoa!!!6 -
I started keto a month ago. I lost 12lbs bringing my total loss to 28lbs. I am hardly hungry and feel great. I dont limit my calories but do track them and hardly go over mfp goal. A matter of fact i actually have a hard time eating up calories because im satiated all the time.6

I started keto almost 4 years ago to address my growing insulin resistance.
I saw weight loss of a few pounds in the first week (water loss and fat), and then continued to lose 1-3 pounds for a few months to lose 30 lbs. Once I was in a normal bmi, my weight loss slowed to about 1 lb a week.
I am 5'8" and not very active. I started around 190 lbs. Went down to about 150 in 5 months, but then I added back more carbs after a year of maintaining and regained some weight. For me, more carbs leads to hunger which leads to weight gain. I then cut out almost all carbs, my health improved again, and I started to lose weight without even trying. Today I weighed 153.
I imagine I will do keto for life due to the health benefits and the ease of weight management that I experience. Ymmv5 -

Pepperoni, cheese, eggs, seeds, nuts, veggies and dip, leftovers, beef jerky, coffee with cream, deli meats, hamburger patty.
TBH, I snack less because I am less hungry now. Snacks became a non issue.7 -
Started "Keto" a week ago. I'm 5'2", 41yr female, SW 188 (1wk ago), CW 179, GW 125. I intermittent fast (1438 cal per day, between 12pm-6pm)...(carb 50% on Tuesdays and Friday, otherwise its 20g carbs per day) walk/run 1mi per day plus 15 mins of floor exercises (squats, etc.). I feel amazing. I think I was gluten intolerant - had no idea!! Would love to connect with others!5

I've been doing keto and IF for about a month and a half. Started at 245~ Currently 218.4.
22.6 lost since I started logging in MFP and 26.6 total. The scales started moving for me the first week, but water weight ofc. I don't usually snack just because I'm not hungry, but when I do it's usually almonds or sugar free jello. Careful with the jello though, some of the sweeteners in a few of the jello brands affects blood glucose levels. I get the off brand Wal-Mart brand and it's fine.3 -

For me, Keto produces such easy appetite control I rarely snack anymore. I usually take a handful of nuts with me when I head to work because I have I'm self-employed with a varied schedule and never know when I'm going to get home to eat but most days I end up bringing it home. Nuts and seeds work well for me when I need a snack.4 -
I have been Keto for 4.5 years starting when I was 63 and started out doing if for pain management of Ankylosing Spondylitis and it helped me get on my feet. Today the arthritis damage has recovered a tad and the pain it so low it is no longer controlling my mobility like it once did. IBS left after the first 6 months and has not returned and all health markers are enhanced. I now can walk as far as I wish. Since I was about down for the count I had to do some healing I guess because the weight loss did not start until day 45 in my case and went on to lose 50 pounds and it has not returned for 3 years now. My daily calories run around 3000 daily and besides limiting the carbs to 50 grams daily I eat what I want when I want it. I do not want any food with added sugars and the artificial stuff or any food containing any form of any grain. After 4.5 years of this WOE I can say it is very easy due to lack of cravings and binge eating because of the former cravings.
Best of success. If you decide straight up Keto is not for you give the Fasting Mimicking Diet a try because some claim it is as health reforming as Keto. Best of success regardless of the WOE that works best for your long term health. I did it for 5 days last week and liked it.

I started keto/low carb in July 2018 and since starting I find it the easiest WOE to control appetite, which then helps me to eat at a caloric deficit. My initial week my weight loss was 8 lbs (obviously mostly water), but I didn't lose anything for the following 2 weeks. Since July I have lost a total of 51 lbs with a goal to lose about 45 to 50 more (I'll know when I start to get closer to my goal weight where I'd like to settle). I have been losing at an overall average of about 1.5 lbs per week. I didn't do a lot of exercise in the beginning, but I have been incorporating elliptical and outdoor cycling workouts more often in the last couple of months. I plan to start adding in strength training as well.
I know that it may not be for everyone, but it works well for me. Good luck!4 -

Just out of curiosity, why so many woos in response to GayleHawkins comments? I think I read that it is a negative reaction...not sure what would cause this negativity. I thought he was just sharing what worked for him and how his way of eating has helped him, I like to think that this is a supportive network. what am I missing?... Because a lot of the information was bad, as in incorrect and/or no basis in facts. No one disputes that keto works for a lot of people, but a lot of woo tends to follow along with it.20 -

@Sasa4u welcome to MFP forums and thank you for your concern but Woo is without any real meaning other than some anonymous person does not like a post for any reason under the sun.
Life was slipping away from me in 2014 when Google found a Keto article on MFP. I did earn my OD degree in 1986 from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis TN but my arthritis (Ankylosing Spondylitis) was so advanced by that time I got in daily therapy but had to have both hips replaced a few years later and a never worked as an OD. I threw myself into reading all of the research that I could find to prevent my mobility from totally grinding to a halt and trying to stay mobile enough to still walk OK and be able to drive a car. Tomorrow I will be in therapy for most of the day since on Thursdays I have 3 three sessions in two different towns. On Mondays and Tuesdays I only have one session each day. Reversing arthritis is a slow and painful process because it had a 40 year head start but at 68 my health, mobility and health markers are better than 20 years ago.
Back to your Woo question I have noticed when article links from professional health sources are included in a post there are going to be a few Woo's so I just ignore them since they have no known meaning. I only make posts that are medically factual to the point that I expect to be able to defend them in a court of law. If I miss post I will correct it when someone provides a source that shows with science why I am wrong.
It it comes to WOE's (Way Of Eating) there is no one way even for the same person. I post what is working in my case at the time of my post but never tell others how they should eat yet there are a few that are willing to tell me my WOE is wrong for me.
Now that I have been able to reverse some serious health issues by changing my way of thinking (by reading research), eating and moving therefore preventing a near term total health failure I have moved to working on longevity factors (plan to be walking and talking at my 110th birthday party) and how I need to modify my WOE based on new research. I spend 20+ hours a week reading all of the science I can find and tonight I ordered three new books that were mention by a very smart doctor in a Youtube video concerning gut microbiota after learning the danger of eating red meat due to a normal gut microbiota function.

MFP is a very supportive site. Members of MFP support anyone working to become more fit; trying lose, maintain, or gain weight; trying to improve the nutrition they take in; working towards a better relationship with food; or anything else related. They also support any safe way someone chooses to reach their goals be it keto, IF, Weight Watchers, or any of the hundreds of "named" diets out there. What doesn't get support is any member promoting something unsafe (like a very low calorie diet or lengthy fasts) or making unsubstantiated claims about any particular diet or food that supposedly cures things like cancer (or making those kinds of claims with questionable sources).
Welcome! Enjoy and learn but make sure your critical thinking cap is on as you read through the forums.16 -
I lost the first week I was on keto. I can't remember how much though.
I started off at 224. Been at it for 8 months and I'm now about 178. I've been stalled for about 2 months though. Jumping up and down the same few pounds. I also switched to carnivore for a little while to see how that goes.
I'm only 5'3" and want to lose at least 50+ more pounds.
I just lose really slow apparently.

@LiLee2018 after a huge loss like that some like to maintain for 6-12 months to let the body to reset at that much lower weight. Great job.1

I noticed you already got 5 "woos" on your honest question about "woos". Welcome to MFP, the "woo" capital of the world! Personally, I think if someone "woos" something said, there should be a requirement that they have to explain why they used their "woo" power. Of course, some people will "woo" just about anything.

Keto is not for everyone, nor does it need to be. I did South Beach Phase 1 (the teal book) for less than a week in 2005 or so and it wasn't for me, and I am fine with that.
I am happy for the people who find keto a good fit for them.

Gale, I don't woo you. I read that link. I took my leisurely time doing so, and got to the last paragraph a few minutes ago. Over the past 2 weeks I've had more days failing than succeeding at keto. That last paragraph, giving me permission for one of those fail days, made me grin.5 -

Because a lot of the information was bad, as in incorrect and/or no basis in facts. No one disputes that keto works for a lot of people, but a lot of woo tends to follow along with it.
I have seen so many play with facts and studies to promote themselves or their cause.
Thats why i only listen to credible medical doctors and professors. It eliminates all the noise.

@JeromeBarry1 that last line drives home a good point in the link you were talking about. We do not need to make Keto or any other WOE into another religion like cult. After 4.5 years of Keto I have learned there are many ways of doing it and it does not have to be a full time thing even. My Keto research is getting down to what is going on at a cellular level. The quantum physics/mechanics aspect is mind blowing. The human body is wonderful and it is full of unknowns for sure.7 -

I started keto January 7th I have lost around 8kgs/18lbs. After about 6 weeks I was beginning to get sick of eating the same food and have missed fruit and the occasional cracker etc. I have since added these back in and find I am still losing. I am much happier since adjusting my carb intake.5

have been doing Keto for years. It is one of the easiest LIFESTYLES......for me anyway. I dont call it a diet its just the way i eat. We all know the hardest thing about any new way of eating is being able to stick with it long term. Trust me i know how hard it is for anyone starting keto. Its hard because for most of you your whole life your body has been programed to burn CARBS for fuel. Now your only feeding it 20-30 carbs and thats through green veggies. It takes a week or two for your body to say " OK this SOB is not going to feed me carbs so im going to burn this fat." When you get to this point it is true what they say you lose your hunger totally.
I go by the 70-25-5 rule 70%-fat,25%-protein,5%-carbs. I also intermittent fast for 16 hours, so i eat in a 8-hour window. Here is my thoughts on IF. When you are feeeding your body every 3 hours whats it going to think "Got this food to burn thanks." Now if im fasted whats your body going to think" This MF is not feeding me so ill burn what he has lots of ......fat" Its funny writing this because I think of it as me vs my body LOL. In a way it kinda is MIND over BODY.
My must haves are
eggs,bacon,spanich,avocado,coconut oil,cheese, and butter. I have these things probably about every day.
Wife is calling so need to wrap this up any question about anything just friend me and hit me up. I am always willing to help any one that wants to live the LOW CARB LIFE15
