It's the auto-correct when someone is using inappropriate language....so it changes the word to "kitten" instead.

The message board software automatically corrects any swear word to *kitten*. But sometimes people who are familiar with that will just type *kitten* in place of a swear word they would normally type. So you kind of have to fill in the blanks.1

This was implemented one April Fool's Day to replace ********* as the prohibited word feature.
It was marginally acceptable as an April Fool's joke, but for everyday use it is stupid and causes confusion, but they refuse to acknowledge this and revert to the previous *********, which made a lot more sense.11 -
At one point it was *asparagus* and another *babysloth*. I will admit, sometimes now in real life I'll use "kitten" as an expletive.8

I thought I was the only one still upset about the way *kitten* was handled when first rolled out. Seeing the staff say that ESL speakers who were confused by it could leave the board was hugely disheartening. Glad I'm not the only one.5 -
It reminds me of back when Flickr had a safe search filter, and when you had that filter off, the option to go back the safe viewing said something like, “Take me back to the kittens.”
Anyone else remember this? Or maybe they still have it...0 -
