Heart healthy

I’ve had open heart surgery 3/7/18 and I’ve put on weight I’m not active (unable) I’ve had so many life changes I’m starting a diet so any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated heart healthy low sodium

Have you talked with your cardiologist about a diet/weight loss plan that’s appropriate for you? I would also ask the cardiologist for a referral to a registered dietician specializing in nutrition for people with medical conditions like yours.12

Definitely talk to your doctor about what is appropriate for your specific situation. The American Heart Association generally recommends DASH as a heart healthy diet and they have details on their website. (Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, low sodium, high potassium).9

My friends who have had open heart surgery have been offered cardiac rehab exercise guidance, and dietary advice. Has your medical center offered that? If not, I'd seek it out. Ask your doctor for a referral to physical therapy and to a registered dietician. Us random idiots on the internet are much less knowledgeable sources!

I actually think it would be unwise to take advice from strangers over the internet when we are talking about something as serious as your heart. While I know that the DASH diet is often recommended as a heart-healthy, low salt diet, to accept this without seeking advice from a professional is not in my recommendation as we do not know your individual needs.8

Another vote for getting a referral from your doctor to a dietitian.5

Look up Caldwell esselltyn, he is well known for his long standing and proven results in helping people with heart disease.2

I won’t take dietary advice from a doctor. They only get around 4 hours nutrition training. Dietitian is where I would go.

OP-start with your doctor/team and get a referral to a dietitian that can help you get started. I wouldn't be surprised if they recommend you to the DASH protocol, but it's good to go in and talk to them and get a personalized plan in place.
