So I’ve recently got myself an Apple Watch. I’m trying to work on a calorie deficit do I use the active or total calories from my watch ?? Many thanks

I only use “active”.
“Total” includes the calories that you would have burned for that same period of time just by being alive.
However MFP already allocates you those calories (the ones for just being alive during that period) so if you take “total” as your figure then you are double logging those calories. Over time that’s going to add up and affect your weight loss.
Just use “active” calories. Those are the additional calories that you’ve burned solely through exercise and that aren’t already accounted for on your MFP total.2 -
After you have some solid data (like 30+ days) go into Apple health kit and add you average resting and active calories. That will be your TDEE. Take your deficit from that # and manually set your calories goal in MFP.
Ex: 1500 resting + 500 active -250 = 17502 -

That's not accurate, actually. "Active" calories on the watch are calories expended while you are up and moving around, whether you are going for a run or just walking to the mailbox. I usually accrue a few hundred just doing housework. If you also exercise, those calories will be included in the "active" total.1
