So the nutrition facts say:
5 servings in bag
1 serving: 16 pieces
I counted the whole bag to ration out the servings....how many m&ms do i find? 40. So........

It says about 16 pieces, not exactly 16 pieces. You have to weigh them to be accurate.5

Those must be supersized peanuts!
If I didn't have a scale I would divide the total number of m&ms by the 5 servings. In this case one serving would be 8 pieces.
As a side note, anything in parenthesis or with the word 'about' on a food label is just a general reference, not data.0 -

Okay for all y'all saying "weigh them" you do understand that it's claiming that about 16 pieces = 1oz and that should be roughly 80 pieces in the bag. Yes? So 40 is half of 80 meaning are they wing about the 1oz? Or are they wrong about the est pieces? It can't be both. So even if i weigh 1 oz and it comes up 8 pieces, is that still 160 cal? Or is that less ? If it were 1 or even five off, it wouldn't bother me. But we are talking the difference in 160 cal vs 80 cal.5

Always go by weight. Things like M&Ms vary in size. 28g = 150cal, regardless of how many pieces that comes to.6

The nutrition info is for the weighed serving. The manufacturer then estimates the volume serving (cups, pieces) and the number of servings per bag.
Obviously their estimating stinks. Hopefully the number of servings will be closer by weight than it is by volume. But the weight is the measurement used for determining the nutrition info.4 -
I don't currently have a scale...that's why i was going by approx serving size. I have come to the conclusion that they just bamboozled me half the mm7

If you don't have a scale then while you can make claim that their counting is off with regards numbers of individual candies that should be expected to be in the bag, there's no way of knowing whether or not they were inaccurate with the amount of candy was in the package by weight. Lesson learned: scales are useful.9 -

I have some trust issues with huge corporations, but I'm pretty sure you weren't "gyped" half the M&M's. The Mars Corporation is not out to get you. The package size is based on weight, not how many pieces are in it. This isn't some big conspiracy theory.

You'd be surprised how many companies have the incorrect amounts on nutrition labels. Ironically although they are a requirement to be on the product, there is nothing to state that the info on the label has to be accurate.
I ran into this problem with a large company called Loblaws/ Superstore in Canada. Their house brand, President's Choice, has many incorrect labels.
An example was their Pumpkin seed kernels. The nutrition label states 1/4 cup (28 grams) is 260 calories. Every other brand I looked at states it is a 1/3 of a cup (28 g) not a 1/4 cup. Their sourdough bread states 2 slices (50g) is 130 calories. It's supposed to read 1 slice (38g) is 130 calories. 2 slices would be approx. 180 calories.
Ultimately packaged foods should never be relied upon for nutritional data, IMHO. I now tend to use the USDA Food composition site for more accuracy.
Besides, those M&M's are dangerously unhealthy...one serving has 25% of your RDI of saturated fat and 13g of sugar? Yikes!!15 -

i don't understand your complain...both have the same weight (28g) as a serving size...but one says 1/4 cup and the other says 1/3 - it could be that the 1/3 cup has slightly larger seeds vs. the 1/4 cup serving5 -

But seriously... I am so glad that there's only one train station shop within a 30 km radius of where I live that sells peanut butter m&ms... Sadly, I my train stops for 10 minutes at that particular station. It's enough to get out and buy a pack when I'm traveling outside of rush hours...4
