Plateau? *sigh*

I started MFP at the end of March @ 233, now I'm 199... Every week I've been losing something slowly, but I've been losing.
I went to a friends wedding last Saturday & gained 5lbs over night. I'm not sure how that happen, but it took me ALL WEEK to get rid of the 5lbs. I'm finally back to 199 now. The scale doesn't want to shift.
Could this be a plateau? Now what?
edit:
I know some of you see it as I lost 5lbs in a week... but this is the way I see it... I gained 5lbs then lost is. So I'm right back to where I was originally (doesn't feel like i actually "lost" anything for a week plus)
Wedding food was salty, maybe have been water weight from sodium
I'm doing 30DS and finaly got to Level 3. Level 2 was hard, Level 3 is soooooo easy that I feel like I'm not getting a workout. =/

No. Keep doing what you're doing.0

You beat it. Move on and be happy!0

So you gained 5lbs in a few days, took you all of last week to get it off. So From Monday - Thursday, you haven't lost any weight and you think you have an issue? You do, it's called "Impatiences"0
-
You find out how to break out of your plateau (minus starving yourself) - let me know!0
-
Yes, it could be a plateau. Change up your exercise routine, and do it for 10-15 minutes longer each week. Lessen your calorie intake. Good luck!0

Ah this is so right and I am SO right there with you! I've only lost 4 lbs in the month of April.......it's still a loss and I am still impatient!!0 -

you may be right... but I'm right back to where I was two weeks ago, so maybe that's why I feel like I'm stuck. I haven't lost weight in two weeks...0 -
i don't think there's a plural to "impatience".. but anyway..
make sure you're logging calories accurately. measure everything until you can eye-ball it. are you having too many "cheat" days? are you not challenging yourself during workouts? there's a lot that could be going into a steady-scale. get a heart rate monitor to calculate your burned calories accurately, too.
you do need patience, but i understand your frustrations. keep at it.. getting healthy is a LIFE style adjustment, you have your entire life to perfect it.0 -
Usually a plateau is after weeks of no change... when you are doing all the right things. Not sure this is a plateau, but I really don't suggest you stop exercising... if anything do the same or more and really watch what you are eating0
-
you cannot actually gain 5 lbs of fat overnight.
What you gained was the weight of the food, and perhaps the food was high in sodium, so you also retained more water weight.
it can take several days for water weight to be released after a high sodium day.
Doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about *S*0 -
So, you gained 5 lbs overnight......and you LOST the 5 lbs in a week. So, what's the problem? I would be grateful just for losing the 5 lbs...and I certainly wouldn't be complaining about it. You have to be a bit more patient...weightloss doesn't happen overnight...if it did, everybody would be stuffing themselves all day, expecting the weight to vanish while we sleep.0

Could be you were drinking alcohol at the wedding??? More late night food and drinks than normal ...extra sodium from processed foods???
I don`t think you will have put on 5lbs overnight...just the same way you would not lose 5lbs overnight.
So just get back on the wagon and carry on as before...you may find that you lose even more over the next week.
I don`t think it is a plateau...just a little binge on the wrong things and now you are paying the prices, which will work itself out if you keep up the good work.
good luck hun x0 -
Ummm.....uh....yeah....I'm no expert here, but I was under the impression that a "Plateau" is when the scale DOESN'T move...like, at all....for like, weeks....like, not up or down...no?0
-
Not a plateau...Don't use that word now. Too soon to call it that if you lost 5 pounds in a week.0
-
I took a look at your diary, you NEED to eat more...and I have to assume you do not log your water...if you don't drink water than that is where your extra weight is...for the next week aim to drink 10-12 glasses of water and watch the scale move!!!0
-
Most likely it is. I keep floating right around 200. I'll dip under it, but I always come back to 200. Such is the roller coaster of weight loss. Going to keep on keeping on though and eventually I will see some movement. I am not going to give up and you shouldn't either.0
-
Well, unless you ate over 17,000 calories, your weight gain was not caloric. Probably fluid. Decadent wedding fare is usually rich in fat and sodium... drink at least 1/2 your weight in ounces of water each day, and that should flush your system well, and get you back on track.0

Consulting a profession with food intake, and they said for my height/weight to stick with 800 a day & not to eat back exercise calories.
Since they are professionals I've stuck with their advice.
edit: I drink water I just drink a lot of it, so i dont log it0 -
I have lost NO weight in six weeks ..... although I do feel better and my tape measure says I have lost a bit.
(AndI promise I have been good!!!)
I seriously don't think that what you have is a plateau just yet.
Well done for losing the weight you put on. I am impressed.0 -
I've noticed my body will lose several pounds one week, and then nothing for two or three weeks, and then another loss. Just hang on. It'll keep moving if you keep working.0

Breaking out of a plateau is about doing more intense and challenging workouts. You need to try different things, work different muscle groups, mix it up with swimming, rollerblading, etc. I recommend trying some team sports, like recreational soccer or something exciting like kayaking or Stand up paddle boarding.
Anything you can do to shakeup your regime. What happens when you start to get more fit is that your body learns to more efficiently complete the workouts you've been doing. If you don't increase the challenge, you will stop losing weight as rapidly as you did initially.
So get out there, get motivated, and push yourself!0 -

I just need to take a moment to have a minor freakout and do a happy dance for your dramatic weight loss. YOU LOOK FANTASTIC! My jaw literally dropped.0 -

THIS might be what's happen too!.... I am doing 30DS, and finaly got to Level 3, it's sooooooooooooooooo easy for me. Level 2 was really hard, but now I'm on level 3 and I feel like my body isn't even working out because it just isn't difficult at all0 -

Fair enough, thank you for clearing that up for me. I am 5,7 and currently 225, I am not telling you what to do by all means, I am not a professional I just know what works for me. I would seriously question someone who told me to eat so little. Again, just me.0 -
800 calories?? I'm afraid you've been mislead, that is really really low. My doctor said to never go below 1,000 net calories. What profession are they?
ETA: And I'm only 5' 2".0 -
 I think people use the word platue a lot... true platues are when you are stuck within a few pounds over amonth or more.
wedding food can be hard on the scale for a short term, sodium, fat , alcohol.... keep eating right & as you can see your weight went back down. BTW loosing 5 lbs in a week is fantastic, I slipped up at the begining of the summer and allowed 5 TRUE pounds back on & it takes me 5 weeks to get it back off!
I agree with some of the others that 800 calories seems drastic, Im not a doctor nor do i play one on TV, however from what nutritionists have told me 1000 calories bare minimum (& thats a little low if you are really active) maybe you should seek a second opinion on that point.
Persistance & patience pays off. stay the course!:flowerforyou:0 -

Oh goodness. This doesn't very beneficial at all. What exactly was this persons profession, if I may ask.0 -

I was recently being obsessed with the scale, I lost sight of my big picture. I want to be 60yrs old ripped and lean. How do I achieve this? By the habits I develop now. Sometimes we stress ourselves too much.
Stress is also diet and exercise, if you try to do a radical change in your diet more than likely it won’t last. If we try to do an intense exercise program without preparation we will more than likely give up. So how do we get up to do the diet we want to do, how do we do this intense program we want to do. We “build” to it. I do Intermittent fasting, that’s when you fast for x amount of hours and eat for the rest of the hours. For me it’s a 20hr fast with a 4hr feeding window. I eat like this daily, I don’t eat anything till 5pm. I didn’t just wake up one day and “hey I am going to do this method of eating.” I built up to it, 1 protein shake in the morning, one in the after noon, eventually it turned in to 1 protein shake then 0.
What I am talking about is a gradual slow change, be patient. For me to develop the habits I need to be that 60yr old ripped guy, I need to be patient, consistent. The only way you can be consistent is if you do something you can achieve. Such as “walk a1 mile everyday for 2 months” then build up to 1.5… etc. You don’t just go out and say “I am going to run 10miles.” If you are patient, and develop these things in to habits, when you’re old, you’d run circles around most people in your peer group. It’s not about “quick weight loss” about “how fast can I lose it?” It’s about being healthy for the rest of your life.0
