I am a yoyo dieter. I've dieted for the lady 17 years and I'm 37. I've tried every diet. I'm in 2minds to try slimming world or calorie counting. I'm scared I wont lose the weight. I weigh 16 stone

Either should work, they both work (like all diets) by calorie restriction. The difference being MFP is free.

Read the sticky posts on the Getting Started and General Diet board, there's a lot of useful information that will help you achieve your goals.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure it's sustainable with patience and consistency you can and will lose weight.

Well it didn't go on in a week did it?

You need to get you head to reconcile with a healthy rate of loss being 1-2lbs per week and bear in mind that weight fluctuates so you won't always see the loss on the scale every week.

Alas, losing the weight fast generally means you gain it right back because you do things that you won't do for the rest of your life. Once you stop, the weight comes back.

Try to think of this as changing your lifestyle... the weight-loss will be incidental to your improved health and fitness level. It won't happen fast, but if you make PERMANENT changes in the way you eat and live, then your body will start to change shape and size.

Regardless of what program or plan you use, the laws of science still apply... Calories IN less than Calories OUT equals weight loss. Any other formula fails over the long-term.

If you try to do it too fast, your body just goes into shock and starts playing hardball with you.

Even though fast is what we ALL want, Slow and Steady wins the race.

Yeah, all that crap your parents told you was true. Bummer, right?

But MFP makes it pretty easy to get it under control. Good Luck!

Small changes that you can do without giving up after a couple of weeks. Maybe calorie count but set to maintain, see how much you should comfortably be eating first? I started by just trying to make breakfast a better food choice each day (low sugar, some sort of protein and fibre), and then working out what would be my best snacks out of food I like.

My experience tells me that "diets" are very nice for a week or two. And then the yo - yo starts. I read the information on MFP and (for once) I listened to those, who know best: all those supportive members on MFP ! And what do they say? Being serious about losing weight means changing to a healthier, very long term life style. Nothing drastic, nothing earth shattering - just one step at a time. Use MFP and they will do all the necessary calculations for you. Take advise from the members. Choose your macro percentages so that you have plenty options available for your daily meal plan. I started with MFP 420 days ago, so far lost 33 kg (70 pounds). Give it a try, it does work.

ObDisclaimer: i've never done slimming world/ww however my take on it is i'd do regular calorie counting if you can, but if the explicit counting of calories is something you 100% can't/won't tolerate, then something like slimming world which tries do get the same results, but without explicitly counting everything (plus the additional support) might be a better fit for you.

I know a lot of people hate the free points stuff, but I think in practice with the foods a person typically eats, it's not as big a problem in practice as it is in theory.
