Why not use this app? Fill out your profile, set it to lose 1 or 1.5 lbs per week, and it will give you a calorie goal.6

What Kimny said and really it depends mostly on your height, gender, and amount of body fat. Since your metabolism is a biological function, it will ebb and flow every day depending on many factors. Your ability to follow a calorie deficit depends on stress, health, and so many factors that it's not really a formula, it's a guideline and it will require some trial and error, careful recording, and paying attention to how you feel. Be patient and you will succeed! Best of luck to you! -Roberta5

Whether or not that’s a safe pace of weight loss for you depends on your starting weight, height, and how much you want to lose. If you are close to or within your optimal BMI range, then 20 pounds in about 14 weeks would not be a safe or reasonable pace of loss.2 -
2 more important questions than "how" are
1. Why do you need to lose this amount by that particular date?
2. Is it safe and appropriate to lose that much weight in that time frame.2 -
Use MFP to determine calories by entering your stats, a reasonable rate of loss and properly measuring (i.e. weighng) and logging you food.
