Potatoes?

Hello! I know potatoes have gotten a bad rap due to the low carb fads. I was wondering if eating plain baked potatoes is good for weight loss? They are only 93 calories per 100g of plain potatoes. I have always found them really filling and nice. Has anyone had success with potatoes?

There is no food that is good or bad for weight loss. Eat what you like within your calorie limit.
I love potatoes and eat them regularly. My favorite way to eat them is baked and topped with shredded beef, cheese, and broccoli.
Edited to add: Some foods are more satiating than others. When losing, I tended to focus on the foods that kept me full longer. Potatoes fit the bill well.14 -

Some foods are better than others, like oreos are not very good for weight loss, but apples are. There's much more nutrition and they are a lot more filling than oreos. Do you eat potatoes often?
You didn't say anything about nutrition, you specified weight loss. Weight loss is all about calories. But even if we're talking nutrition, there's nothing wrong with eating Oreos if they fit your goals.
And yes, I eat potatoes often. I also eat Oreos.

If they keep you happy and full they are GREAT for weight loss. I would not have success because they don't keep me full for long enough but my results do not matter. It only matters what works for you.
Enjoy!4 -

Oreos are great for weight loss if that is what you are craving and you can moderate them enough to fit them into your day/week.8 -
I am a "volume eater", meaning it just takes a lot of mass to fill me up. I have lost ~90 lbs and eat potatoes regularly because of the low calorie count. Bonus - I am diabetic and the carbs do not spike my blood sugar because of the fiber.9

No food is “good” or “bad” for weight loss as long as you’re in a calorie deficit. You could lose weight eating only buttered donuts as long as you burn more calories than you consume. Unfortunately, because buttered donuts are very calorie-dense (a lot of calories for a small amount of food), you’d be pretty hungry often. Eating foods lower in calories allows you to eat more, so you stay fuller for longer. Eating only buttered donuts would also adversely affect your overall health after a while (not getting enough vitamins, minerals, fiber, etc.), but weight loss is all about calories – Eat fewer than you burn, in whatever form suits you, and you’ll lose weight.

I eat potatoes as part of my weight loss diet. I would eat them more if I was better at cooking them. They are relatively low calorie, I find them filling, and they are very nutritious. There are very high in potassium which is a nutrient most people do not get enough of.
But I agree with the others. Placing value judgements on certain foods, and only eating foods you determine "good", is not helpful at either weight loss or developing a healthy relationship with food. I believe in another one of your threads it was either said or strongly hinted at that you had a history with eating disorders. If that is the case, I would be even more careful not to assign moral labels to food.5 -

Thank you for sharing your experience! I do find potatoes to be very satisfying I have been reading Dr. Mcdougall's "Starch Solution" book. It's all about thriving off of starches. There's so much conflicting nutrition info out there that it is hard to decide what to do ! lol
The nutritional profile of potatoes is not a matter of opinion. Look up the nutritional profile of the food you want to eat and decide for yourself if that food fits with your goals.
Does that food fill a nutritional hole in your diet?
Does it fill you up and keep you full?
Does it taste good to you?
Does it give you the energy you need to participate in the activities you're interested in?

Keep in mind, it's hard to sell books or lure people to your website by telling them "Eat the foods you like while staying at a calorie deficit. The End." So they have to make it sound complicated or give you a new rule to follow.
All you need to lose weight is a calorie deficit. Different people find different foods filling, so some people do better low carb, some high carb, some eating lots of beans, others eating lots of chicken. None of that affects the actual weight loss though, just how you feel while you are trying to eat in that deficit. I found it fairly easy to set aside a couple hundred calories for Oreos or ice cream or a big pretzel or a beer while I was losing weight. It would have hindered my weight loss if I didn't eat them, because I would've been miserable and quit.
For health, you want to get enough protein, fat, and fiber, plus plenty of nutritious foods so you get all your vitamins and minerals. But you don't have to eat all nutritious food to be healthy, eating a treat can't wipe out the good stuff you've already gotten.
So no foods are universally bad for weight loss. Some people can't moderate specific foods, so might need to cut them out for awhile, but 150 cals of Oreos at the end of the day with my tea was never a problem for me. Like wise an occasional burger and fries at Wendy's. I just logged it and kept going.
I love potatoes and find them very filling. I need a couple of starches every day to feel satiated. I eat potatoes, pasta, rice, bread etc every day.9 -
I lost 60 pounds and have maintained the loss for over 2 years eating potatoes probably 2-3 times a week in one form or another. I also have a handful of Oreos, or chocolate, or ice cream pretty much every night4

Potatoes are a great, nutritious, and filling food but make sure you eat the peels also. Both parts have a lot of nutrients but there are some in the skin you don't get in the flesh like potassium, iron, and niacin plus 2/3 of the fiber in a potato is in the skin.4 -
On days I want potatoes, I log them then work around that choice.2

I haven’t cut out potatoes or other starches and have had good success so far with my weight loss - 84lbs and counting. I tend to feel better overall when my meals are balanced so I still eat all that good stuff.4

When looking outside yourself for information about weight loss it is better to consider it as a possible idea instead of a rule. My own way of eating is loosely based on the Mediterranean diet but I don't follow their rules and I don't eat that way 7 days a week. It was an idea and since I like eating that way I incorporated it into my plan. The only thing that matters is that I am happy(ish) and mostly satisfied at the end of the day while being in a calorie deficit.
Success comes with sustainability and that requires that you know yourself and what you will be happy doing.

I dont eat potatoes as for me they just trigger me eating more food. The best potato is a jacket potato smothered in butter and cheddar and chopped spring onion. Lovely. Needs to be as big as a head too.4

I like to slice them thin and bake them with a bit of salt or seasoning. Chippies! I like to do this with sweet potatoes too. I dont oil the potatoes I just spray the pan so they dont stick and flip them over halfway through cooking. I dont eat them every day. I guess you could say that they are on a rotation. I go a month without them then ill be at the store and buy a couple. Im not purposefully adding them in or keeping them out of my meal plan.3
