It totally depends on your age, height, current weight, goal weight and activity level. Like @terytha said, go through the set-up on this site. It'll give you a calorie target.
There are some guidelines for how much weight you can safely lose per week.
75+ pounds = 2 lbs per week
40-75 lbs = 1.5 lbs per week
20-40 lbs = 1 lb per week
Under 20 lbs = 0.5 lbs per week8 -

How long did it take you to gain the weight? Slow, steady and thoughtful should be your method for losing it.

You can lose it fast and crash diet and then be back in 6 months looking for the next gimmick of the week to help take off all the weight you’ll have gained back or you can do it sustainably at 0.5 to 2lbs per week depending on where you’re at and hopefully pick up some healthy habits along the way to help ensure you keep the weight off. Just speaking from experience.11

Also how much people can eat without gaining weight has been shown in studies to vary greatly from person to person even taking into consideration gender, age, fitness level and activity level so what works for some people might not work for others.

Losing weight quickly is often a recipe for needing to lose that same weight again in a few of months. If you want to lose it quickly and then don't mind gaining it back, I honestly don't have an answer as I've never had that goal. If you'd like to lose it and keep it off, use MFP as it's intended.
With 56 lbs to lose, set your weekly goal to 1 or 1.5 lbs per week and MFP will give you a calorie goal. Log accurately and consistently. Make sure you find ways to fit in your fave foods occasionally to help you stay on track. It's not necessary, but doing some strength training as you lose can help protect your muscle mass and may have you liking your shape better when you hit goal weight.

I can "feel good" eating too little and eating over my calories. "Feel good" isn't a very good indicator of much of anything. And I think most people would prefer to keep lean muscle mass instead of having to rebuild it later (not to mention that your heart is also a muscle).16 -

Absolutely no one should suggest a number to you without more details.
How much string do I need to cross this gap? No, I'm not going to tell you how wide the gap is or anything about the string. You just have to guess.
Anyone who tries to answer that kind of question is telling you more about themselves than about your needs.
You have 3 options here: 1. You can give us more details (height, weight, age, activity level, etc) and we can all give more informed guesses. 2. You can use the guided setup here at MFP and use the goals they give you. 3. You can use a different calculator (like a TDEE calculator) to get an estimate.
All of these options should be better than the random guesses we could give you without info. In any case, the important thing is to choose a goal and then try it out for a few weeks and adjust based on your personal real world results.14 -

If only it were that easy and self-evident, eating disorders would not be the huge problem they are. Unfortunately, people often feel fine for quite awhile, until all the internal silent consequences start barking and it takes months or even years to recover, assuming the damage isn't permanent.
We get lots of folks here who say under-eating is no big deal while they are doing it. We get very few who say it was no big deal a year after the fact. I hope what you're doing works out for you, but if it does you will be in the minority.11 -
