Really struggling...

So i have JOJO dieted for most of my life and now I'm at the heaviest ive ever been and I'm really struggling, I tried going to the gym once a week for an hour and then extracurricular exercise for 3-4 every week but i never lost any weight at all like i wasn't eating any different, and it just demotivated me... im trying to get back into it all but im really struggling to do this as a lifestyle change and not just another diet :/ im about 30-40 pounds overweight

    Same here !! Monday-Friday I take a spinning class for 45mins and started last week with a personal trainer 5x a week. I didn’t lose an inch. I know that I have to tighten up my food intake.

    I am struggling like you. It took me a month to lose 3.8 pounds. I am my heaviest I’ve ever been. What is working (slowly) for me is keeping my calories at 1200. I do adjust and add an extra 1-200 calories if I exercise. I’m not perfect. And if I mess up one day I say okay tomorrow I will do better. I am also aiming for 30 pound weight loss. I anticipate to loss it by January 2020. It’s not as fast as I would like- BUT it is better than gaining another 30 by January 2020. The gym will tone you up. But to lose weight- you need to watch your calories and portion sizes. I just posted a 30 pound challenge. Do it with me! It will be nice to have company on this journey!

    The hardest thing is diet. Before I competed, I was in decent shape, however, when I started eating and tracking everything like I should [35% Protein, 35% Carb, 30% Fat] EVERYTHING CHANGED! It was slow, but it started changing month by month ( Pictures help). It was funny because my workouts pretty much stayed the same. I have always been active so it did not change drastically. At the end, it comes down to eating, they say 80% food, 20% exercise. Staying active is definitely a plus and necessary! But, what you eat makes the biggest impact. It is a lifestyle change and will be slow.

    Calculate a calorie deficit to lose 1 lb per week. Start a food diary, plan a menu and try to hit your number. Don’t go to pieces when you make mistakes. Give yourself plenty of time for the calorie counting learning curve. Keep your diary no matter what. Try to keep an attitude of experimentation.

    Don’t jump to the conclusion that you need to limit yourself to 1200 calories. The best plan is one you will actually follow.

    The gym is overrated as a weight loss strategy. Weight loss takes place mostly in the kitchen. Calorie counting works. It takes a lot of persistence but it works.

    Don't try to change everything at once. Start with one small change. If you stick with that, add another small change the next week. Keep adding small changes or making adjustments until you find the balance that works for you. You might even start by having your first small change be to log consistently. Don't worry about diet or exercise, but just get in the habit of logging and work on selecting reasonably good entries in the database.

    Exercise is great for so many things, but...when it comes to losing weight it's 80% food, 20% exercise. As others have stated, shop smartly, track your food, eat bulky food that you like (my fav is roasted broccoli with a tsp of parmesan cheese). If you try to lose weight eating foods you hate, you will fall off the wagon very quickly. Good luck!!

    Yes to a lot of the above comments. Also, I've recently 'recommitted' to my goals after a few months of serious slacking. What I found helpful was the success board - seeing what has helped others was useful and it's motivating to see how others have succeeded. I also re-read the pinned threads on the various boards, there's lots of good info there.

    For now Ive bought a smoothie blender to at least replace my bread eating habits and maybe try to eat smaller lunch and we'll see how that goes x

    It sounds like you're losing weight exactly as you should. Maybe your expectations are a little high?
