loose skin an issue if weight loss of 50 - 60 lbs?

I've only lost 18 lbs so far, but I see a lot of comments/questions about loose skin here in the forums. If I get there at all, I'll probably "only" lose 60 lbs at the most, that's still a lot of weight, but I mean it's not as much as for someone who started at 250 or 300 lbs. Has any female approx. 5.6" 204 lbs lost roughly that amount and had a real issue with loose skin?

I started at 195, 5'4.75" and I lost ~70 pounds. I have some loose skin but not enough to consider surgery. I am also 49 and have had 2 kids. Age , genetics and amount of weight lost all play a factor. For me it has not been a serious issue. I hope it will tighten up some after a year or two, but if it doesn't I can live with it.8

5'3" started at 208, now 143. I have a small amount of loose skin on my lower stomach but a larger amount on my triceps. My tricep skin is tightening up but still there and most likely will be. I can live with it. Strength training makes it better though.5

5'5", started at 183, lost to 120, and didn't have a huge amount . . . and I'm 61 years old. There's some visible on my stomach in plank position if lower torso is bare, but everything looks fine with clothes. Arms are OK (see profile pic) but I'm active and have some muscle there. Had some on my rear at first, but it's mostly tightened up over the year and a bit since I hit goal. Your skin will likely keep shrinking for a long time after you hit goal: Mine sure has, and I'm old.12

Thank you both, that's encouraging! I don't anticipate loose skin on my arms so much, but on my stomach, since I seem to carry most of my weight in that area. And I've been strength training and want to get more into a little heavier lifting than what I've been doing so far, so that should help. You both look great, I hope to be able to post similar success in a year or so!3

I'm 4'9", 55, and have lost 60 pounds (I plan to lose another 20-40). At this point, I have no issue with loose skin.4

Wow, great! You must have good genes!1

I'm 5-7 started at 220, now 147. Yes, I have loose skins on my arms, stomach and right above my knees. Do I love it? No. Would I rather be 73# heavier. Hell no.11

even though its mostly genetics, exercises n weight training will help significantly. 5.7 went from 210 to 165 with no loose skin but ive been lifting all along5

5'3" here and have lost 70 lbs. I am 38 and have some loose skin on lower tummy, arms and thighs. Like others have said, I would rather be in this body with the loose skin than carrying that extra 70 lbs! It honestly doesn't bother me much as these jiggly bits are my battle scars!5

Hi Dogslove,
I think it differs from one person to another. went from 176 lbs to 122 and am 45 years old. I've had three children and even if skin is a bit more loose, it has contracted well back

Im 5'6 1/2 almost 43 and lost about 44 lbs(started at 209lbs). no loose skin yet, have another 24 to go but so far doesnt look like there will be a lot of loose skin. it all comes down to genetics, elasticity in skin, and how fast you lose. they say the slower you lose the better it is.3 -
Im down 130+lbs at 36 yrs old. Def. Loose skin, kinda gross but only when i move in certain ways. Still better than being overweight and not bad enough to justify surgery. Your results will vary. My loose skin didnt become a factor until after about 100lbs loss. Im 6' for reference.3

I lost 50 or so pounds at 54. Now I'm 60 and I have a lot of loose skin in my thighs and arms. I think it's partly genetic but I also have very dry skin as I spend a lot of time outdoors walking and running and they don't get a lot of lotion. As others have said, I'd rather be wrinkly than fat.4

One additional comment: When we talk about loose skin, we need be clear that we're talking about the same thing.
True loose skin is quite thin: Think about how the skin looks if you pull up a tiny pinch of it somewhere that has minimal fat, like the back of your hand. Post-weight-loss loose skin will fall in quite small wrinkles, about the thickness of a medium-weight fabric, such as a finer corduroy or a lightweight denim.
Thicker folds, like 1/2 inch or more, are skin with a remaining layer of sub-cutaneous fat dragging them down.
Sadly, we don't neatly lose fat starting with the outer layer, and successively proceeding to inward layers. We can lose fat pretty much anywhere within our fat mass. The fat mass becomes squishier, and may be a little likelier to sag downward under gravity's influence.
Think of how a water balloon behaves with only a little water in it (but no air) vs. a water balloon that's pretty full with water. The latter stays plump and rounded, resisting gravity. The former gets pliable and kind of floppy. If you held a slightly-filled water balloon at the edge of a table, some of it would droop over the edge, whereas a plumply full balloon would just sit there being rounded, no drooping.
One of the reasons I adjusted my goal weight down a little when I got close was that I saw I had subcutaneous fat dragging on skin in some spots to the point where the skin could never shrink.
I'm not encouraging unhealthy thinness to avoid droopy areas! Another option at reasonable body fat percent but some droopy areas is recomposition - eating near maintenance to build more muscle but stay at the same weight, which means additional fat loss. Bulk & cut cycles are also an option.9 -
Thank you all for your comments!
Arizona, you sure don't look like you've had 3 children and have ever been overweight!
Ann, that was a very good depiction of loose skin, thank you!
I'm not in a hurry with losing this weight. I've doing strength training and cardio all along, but have the feeling that because I eat at a deficit I neither really increase muscle nor endurance. Even thought about taking a break from the deficit once I've lost 20 lbs to build up some muscle, then go back to the deficit again and try to keep that muscle while losing another 20 etc. This might also help the skin to hold up more. Not sure yet, I kind of like eating approx. the same amount of calories every day, so eating at maintenance for a while, then going down to the deficit might mess me up in other ways. Got to get to the 20 lbs lost first, though!
You all enjoy your Sunday!0 -
I think it’s a genetics question with a lot of people. I’ve lost 65lbs over 18 months with 4 day weekly weight training. I’ve been left with horrendous loose skin that hasn’t budged!!! My body fat has been around 10% for 7 months but no change. 25yr old male so upset as you can imagine.
Hoping it’ll shrink one day before I result too going under the knife! 😔2 -
Two kids and about 40lbs lost. I have some loose skin on my abs. My weight loss is recent so I am hopeful that some recomp and time will lessen the effects of it. The pregnancy with my youngest (whi is almost 5 now), my belly was absolutely huge. No stretch marks though so if my lose skin is the badge I have to wear for carrying him so be it.0

I've lost 86 pounds and I have loose skin. At 50 pounds I didn't, but somewhere around the 70 pound mark it started showing up. I think too it has to do with your height; 80 pounds lost on someone who is 6 feet tall will not give as much loose skin as it would to someone 5'21

I Started at about 400 and am at around 185 now and yeah loose skin is a real issue for me, I'm not sure nothing short of a surgery I can't afford will help me.1

I'm down 80 lbs so far. I don't have any loose skin I'm aware of. Though I've lost it over the course of 3 years. Maybe thats why?0

I’m 5’3”, lost 44 pounds from 173-129, age 63. I’ve been maintaining since the beginning of October. I have loose skin on my upper arms, thighs and stomach (but I’ve also had 2 abdominal surgeries).
My arms have shown improvement, the other areas not so much but I’m still much happier at this weight —and if I’m stuck with my skin the way it is, it’s worth it.
One positive I can report is that my face is filling back out a bit from when I first reached my current weight.2 -

204 down to 140 so far. 31 5’4” only a tiny bit on my triceps. That’s going away though. Don’t expect any elsewhere0

You must feel much healthier though? Being able to move, sit and get up comfortably compensates for loose skin surely?0
