On road bikes.. they’re not essential. They work better in wet weather and do have more stopping power (esp. hydraulic). Cyclocross yes, they’re needed...perhaps if you have a rugged commute or into bike packing/touring.

Yeah they can be overkill but just use the back brake and modulate with front. Takes some getting use to.

Anything calling itself a mountain bike without disc brakes is blatant false advertising. So depend on the conditions and yeahs they are more reliable...plus they look sick. If you’re a roadie rim brakes probably more helpful if you are looking to upgrade wheels and most likely a lot cheaper.
