With some links floating around online about a connection with ingredients in deodorant causing breast cancer. Some links, say it has not been proven. So how concerned should we be on this?

I don’t use anti-perspirant...sweating is a natural and healthy bodily function. Using anything designed to stop that isn’t wise imo.

I was told the deodorant is fine but the antiperspirants contains some kind of aluminum that contributes to Alzheimer's. Not sure how true that is but im going back to antiperspirant coz deodorant just doesn't last long enough for me

I agree with this poster. This is the exact same thing I've read about. It was years ago when I read this but it was some kind of research out of Europe.

If that research was well founded, wouldn’t they have abandoned anti-perspirants? Or they’ve have health warnings on them like cigarette packets?

No credible evidence exists showing this imo.

Probably along the same nonsense as when people thought that using mobile phones caused brain cancer.

Did you ask your GP or Gyn about it?

    Totally this.

This. How much deodorant is really capable of entering the blood stream given topically & bypassing defense system of skin & partitioning?

Maybe OP is confused with more recent news on talc? Safer alternative = cornstarch

The info on this seems to greatly differ in the US than in other coutries. Still no conclusive evidence but they seem more concerned overseas than here.

@caco_ethes Is THIS why you don't wear deodorant?

Ive heard its more because the antiperspirant prevents the underarm from sweating and for some reason this affects lymph drainage or something who the heck knows 🤷🏼‍♀️

I found this on Google Scholar, which people should know is a rather useful place because you can find not only abstracts but hidden away in the nooks and crannies of the Internet are actual research papers which you would have to pay for, Google finds them and links to them.

I appreciate people who worry about these things. They sound the alarm, make people pay attention, and in a few years the concern either fades away or I know to take it seriously.

If deodorants caused cancers, we'd have a lot of rumors about pit cancers.
    We don't.
    It doesn't.

This is really nothing new though...this has been floated around for damn near 20 years. If it was an issue I would imagine something more concrete and conclusive would have come out by now.

Will always use deodorant. Don’t like the thought I ‘smell’ bad so tend to spray very generously. Also agree with earlier comments, sweating is a natural process, so why stop it with anti-perspirant? Can’t be good.

I don’t worry about it. I have a family history of breast cancer, and one of my aunts developed it despite not having used deodorant or antiperspirant for nearly 40 years. I’m morbidly obese and work in a sheet metal factory, so I don’t have the luxury of skipping deodorant (had to ditch antiperspirant because I was constantly developing cysts).

It’s been a long time since I read anything on correlations between deodorant usage and breast cancer, but I do recall about ten years ago there was a study that suggested the culprit linking them may be an aluminum compound found in some antiperspirants.

As a nod to paranoia I switched to aluminum free baking powder.

I think it’s a good measure overall to make sure what we’re putting on our skin is good for us. While I can’t say for certain it causes breast cancer I’d rather not risk. The deodorant I purchase is aluminum free, and better for my skin anyhow. Good to be safe rather than sorry.
