heartburn result of excess water?

Good Morning All...This might sound weird and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced it or if I'm just odd. I've noticed that the more water I drink that I end up with heartburn in the afternoons. Usually I get about 2-3 bottles of water in during the work day but if I go above that I noticed I have heartburn/indigestion in the afternoon. Any ideas? I'd like to increase my water more but I don't like having to take tums daily. So I'm wondering if this could be something like I need to increase my salt intake or something along those lines to help. Does anyone have any ideas?

I always drank more water when I had heartburn which always made it feel worse. Are you sure you are not already experiencing it before you start?

On increasing water you only need enough water to be properly hydrated which is indicated by your mid morning and later urine color. If it is mostly clear to straw yellow you are fine if it is dark you need to drink more. In normal everyday situations you can also count on your thirst signals to keep you hydrated. There is not much point to over hydrating unless you just like making extra trips to the restroom.

Salt would assist you in retaining water but I am unaware of it doing anything for heartburn.

I control mine mostly by eating but I only ever experience it at night and early morning so I have learned how and what to eat for dinner that seems to keep it from happening most of the time. These days I rarely eat a full dinner I usually just eat a snack and that works for me.

I find that when I get heartburn it's usually because I have a full stomach (that can include liquid) and I am slouching badly. If I sit up straighter (I have a desk job) I tend to have fewer problems.

There is no reason to drink tons of water if your urine color is OK. The 8 glasses recommendation is often repeated but isn't really accurate:

Also there is some evidence that just chugging lots of water doesn't have much benefit:

I've always been a big water drinker. Personally, I've never experienced any gastric issues. Hope you figure it out. Good luck!

You know. I have a desk job as well and I know I don't sit as I should be. I'll have to make a conscious effort to try and sit better to see if that helps :-)

Your stomach can only hold so much. Filling it to the brim - be it with food or water - can trigger heartburn if you're so prone.

Also, why are you drinking so much water at work in the first place, and looking to increase it even further?
  • I used to be able to drink a ton of water but now im dealing with acid reflux and cant. But maybe just drink waht you need and not more. Maybe try warm water ? It helps digestion.
