Can cause heart rhythm irregularities, delirium, panic, psychosis and heart failure.
What else would you like to know about it?14 -
I kinda figured those were side affects, but so serious!
Why would a Weight Loss Place sell such thing to bring harm to people?1 -
Nobody should be selling it. My understanding is its basically legal crack and therefore prescription only.
As for why, because it works. Sorta. Not everyone will have side effects, but everyone feels less hungry.
Until you go off it and get recoil, where you're three times hungrier than you used to be anyway.9 -
I hear you. My BP was under control until I started taking this thing!0
-
Why did your doctor prescribe this? I know that mine wouldn't even if I begged, which I wouldn't. She's young and very conservative with prescribing meds. One of the reasons I love her.
What did your doctor tell you to expect?2 -
I've frequently reminded people that even medical school graduates people at the bottom of the class! Not all doctors are equal.
I have to wonder about the ones who end up at those doctor supervised weight loss centers considering the risky and unproven treatments they recommend.9 -
It’s like boldknee stated....
Doctors who end up at supervised weight loss centers! Not my family doctor.0 -
Sure, phentermine can curb appetite. But! It can also damage your heart.
Here's my favorite post about Phentermine: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10329901/phentermine/p1itschanelle wrote: »I have seen a lot of posts on and off about this and other weight loss drugs. I can vouch that they absolutely work. I have lost a lot weight using Phentermine on and off throughout about a 10 year span.
BUT...
The weight doesn't stay off. And those side effects? They are real.
You could take Phentermine and lose the weight, but you might end up like me. I'm 30 years old, slightly over weight, and have moderate tricuspid valve regurgitation. As in, I might need open heart surgery because my heart was damaged by Phentermine. To be clear, I never took it for more than a few months at a time, was monitored by a doctor, and did everything "right".
My lifespan has likely been shortened to lose a few pounds. Weight I could have lost on my own with a little bit of gumption. It wasn't worth it.10 -
What happens when you stop taking it? Say you're at a lower body mass and likely lower muscle mass too. This means your metabolism has slowed down because you require less energy and your thyroid may have been affected. So when you go back to eating normally you actually end up putting all the weight back on plus more... I don't think it's a sustainable method.4

I am highly against the medication phentermine. I was someone who had been on that medication for over 10 yrs. At first I seen it gave me energy and curbed my appetite. The only side effect at the start was dry mouth and trouble sleeping. I did what rhe doctor advised take 1/2 for about a week to get use to it on a full stomach in the am. Then after a week I could move up to a whole pill daily on a full stomach in the am at the same time everyday and was told to consume more water. I was one who hated water. So my no water daily turned into 3 bottles of water a day. I did everything correctly and lost weight like she said I would. However, I got addicted and felt like I was tired tok much without them and rhen realized I wasn't too tired I just wasn't a busy bee moving at a 100 miles a min like I was when I did take it. Life goes on and I ended up basically taking phentermine for 10 yrs. The only time I didn't have it within each year was probably 1 month to 1 and a half months a yr for 10 yrs. Now 10 yrs later I have diastolic heart failure at 32 yrs old. I am healthy other than that. I quit taking phentermine 2 mo ths ago and thats when my feet started swelling I was so exhausted and not your typical tired from lack of sleep it was so tired I could never get enough rest. I am not overweight and walking or doing physical activity causes my heart rate to go up and me to become out of breath. Also high BP 180/110 just out of nowhere. I have cut off probably 20 yrs of my life all because I wanted to lose weight and then got addicted. Plus it is so easy to get a prescription. No questions hardly except maybe you're initial visit then you're a regular. They do not tell you how damaging this drug is and how addictive it becomes. It seems harmless bcnits legal a d not a narcotic but its just as dangerous and needs to be harder to get and more guidelines and education. I will be on medication for the rest of my life for CHF. It was my choice and I'm not saying g anyone put a gun to my head and made me do it but I just hope this saves at least one person from starting or just TRYING this medication. Stay away from phentermine...please l15

I took phentermine in my 20’s. It’s very addictive and tolerance builds over time making it lose effectiveness. Also keeps you from sleeping well. It’s a bit like speed- gets your heart rate up and gets you moving. Any time I needed to clean my house, I would take a pill beforehand. I could exercise while on it because cardio would make me feel like I’m having a heart attack. Literally, all it did was curb appetite for couple months (until tolerance built and it was no longer effective)
Besides side effects, such as heart problems, phentermine only curbs appetite. It does absolutely nothing to teach you proper portion size or nutrition- meaning you will just go back to your old ways and gain weight once you’re no longer taking.
Your much better off (and healthier) logging calories, in MFP, staying on top of portion control, and being active.4 -
It is essentially like taking meth. As a medical provider I always advise against it. All of the stimulant medications including Ritalin, Adderall and others for ADHD cause heart damage.5

Don't take this, dangerous0

I have been taking this, only 2 months now, and I do love the energy I have. I'm a bit confused by some posts on here tho cuz my doctor said she would only have me on it for 3 months, and I've seen posts with people on it for 10 years! I'm worried about what is being said so I'm gonna make sure not to stay on it to long, im also worried about gaining when I do get off this medicine. Any suggestions!1

It's NOT gonna work if you have to get off and get back on. It teaches you nothing about how to control your appetite and habits on your own. That's why it shouldn't be started in the first place.

Right, it's meant to be short term. I have seen 3 months, but this site says 3-6 weeks:
https://medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a682187.html...Most people take phentermine for 3 to 6 weeks; the length of treatment depends on how you respond to the medication. Phentermine can be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or take it for a longer period than your doctor tells you to.
A doctor who lets their patient stay on it for 10 years is not prescribing it as intended.4 -
How (and why) do we keep pulling back these super old threads?2

For every one of us who say,”ugh, zombie thread”, there’s someone else who might read the resurrected thread, and say,”OMG, I had no idea. Won’t do that.”
Not all of us have the benefit of being “old hands”. We were all noobs once, and anyway, the temptation of quick, pill-fed weight loss needs the occasional cautionary reminder.
Won’t lie. There were some old myth busting threads that were super super helpful for me, too. Still are.
If people weren’t curious, the ACV and green tea threads, MLM miracle shakes, the “electrode” weight loss, Glad Bag track suits, and waist shaking machine, and other “Try This One Trick” clickbait queries wouldn’t pop up occasionally.7 -
I actually do think it is a good thing to be able to read old threads, some of us just joined. However, I didn't intentionally find this one I just was going thru and seen it and read it because I am taking it. I meet a girl on here who told me to go thru the community and read some is the threads so I am doing just that. I appreciate any input yall have! I struggle so any and all is good and welcome! 😁7

I started today, and will only be on it for 3 months. My GP actually mentioned it, I didn't bring it up. I have been trying to lose weight on and off for 6 years and having the hardest time. My labs are normal. So I'm willing to try even with the side effects because because being obese is harder on my body than anything else I feel. Sending you a friend request! We can check in with eachother0
