I am doing a meal plan (just a short one) that was given by a nutritionist. It claims to help you lose 10 pounds in 10 days. Today I decided to input the information into the system and found that I only ate 717 calories today and I am not allowed anything else. I am so hungry right now :sad: but I think today is the lowest calorie day on the plan. I actually lost weight (9 pounds in 10 days) doing this plan about a month ago and found it easier then. This really does work, but what are the dangers of eating so few calories?

Doesn't sound like a very good plan. But then I can't seem to lose anything so what the heck do I know We have always heard not to go under 1200, did your nutritionist say anything about that??0

I never asked, but I always thought the same thing. I think if you aren't doing it all the time, then what's the harm? This meal plan contains lots of veggies and fruit and protein so it seems well balanced?0

I don't think a low calorie diet for a minimal few days would do any harm and it would jump start weight loss as long as you moved to a sensible plan after those few days. However, if you were eating 1600 calories a day and still hungry, I'd say you should probably just suck it up but, if you are still hungry on 700 calories, eat something. Even if it's a large salad with some added protein. Letting yourself get too hungry, especially if you're also missing nutrition can lead to binging.0

There's a reason why a nutritionist is NOT the same thing as a dietician. Dieticians have to go to graduate school. Nutritionists don't. Including a lot of fruits and veggies is great, but that doesn't make it balanced. That just makes it high in fruits and veggies.0

This is a bad idea.
I just spent 3 hours at a dietician's office today because I was eating too few calories!
My body is how you would say "in starvation mode" right now.
You need to get more calories in your diet before this happens to you.
It's just probably not the best idea.
From personal experience anyways..
Because now it is even more difficult to lose weight because everything I eat is getting stored as fat.0 -

before jumping to conclusions I am going to ask questions
Is this a meal plan set up for YOU that your nutrionist/dietician gave to YOU?
When you lost the weight before did it come back?
Will the other days on this plan have more food?
Now Like I know on South Beach Diet at first the calories are fairly low because you don't have much food to choose from but it doesn't throw you into starvation mode either.0 -

I have got to agree with paulamma, tweber, mrsyac, and pretty much everyone else who thinks this is a bad idea. I am by no means a nutritionist, but it is currently my minor in college. I was taught that under 1200 calories/day is a no-no. It will throw your system into starvation mode, so your body clings to anything you feed it. Because this response continues after you stop eating this way, you will gain weight. It's the exact formulation for what they call yo-yo dieting. There are cases where those who are considered morbidly obese are put on diets that are about 800 calories a day (still higher than what you were allowed today). However, this is controversial among nutritionists. Their clients also have to be closely monitored and are not on this regimen for more than a few weeks. You are technically losing weight, but it's not in a good way. You're currently losing water weight and possibly the glycogen (what your body converts carbs/sugar to) storage in you liver and skeletal muscles. It's natural to have water in glycogen in your system, you don't really need to lose it. I think it would be wise to get a second opinion. If you consult your family doctor, I'm sure they can refer you to a reliable nutritionist/dietitian. You most likely won't be losing 10lbs in that short amount of time, but your body will be much happier and you won't be so hungry!0

Yes it was given to me specifically and it works. I wanted to something to boost things as I just had a baby and wanted to lose the first 10 pounds. It stayed off and I am almost at my pre-pregnancy weight. I certainly don't eat like this on a regular basis and eat a well balanced diet usually (with the exception of my birthday last weekend... :laugh: ) I guess it's a pretty controversial topic :happy:0 -
You just gave birth to a baby girl.
Imagine if someone came up to you and say, stop feeding your baby half way thru and deny your baby of half off her daily nurishment.
What would you say to that person?
Love yourself no matter what.
Love your Life no matter what.

I lost 10 pounds my first week just drinking more water and tea and eating 1500 calories. I'm sure with the plan it is mainly water weight that you shed, and the fact that you will have very little "waste" in your body. When you eat more you will gain part of that back. Also starving yourself for that long can slow down your metabolism and make losing weight in the following weeks harder. Really would you rather lose 10 pounds in 10 days then nothing the next 30, or consistantly lose a little each week and work towards healthier habbits. If you don't look at this as something you are going to continue doing, count on putting that weight back on. The best way to lose to to make healthy changes to what you currently do, and make changes that you can stick with.0

I did this plan a month ago and never gained it back. It worked for me and I haven't had any problems losing a pound a week just from eating healthy after I finished this plan either. For me, I just wanted a kick start after having a baby0

I only did this plan when I stopped breastfeeding to try and lose 10 pounds to kick things off. I only have 8 pounds to go until I am at my goal weight and plan to lose the last 8 by eating well balanced meals.

I think if your Nutritionist gave you the plan then it cant be to bad for you, and it seems you are just looking for a jump start not a fix. yes this among other things on this website will ruffle some feathers- take it with a grain of salt- if this plan was given to you do you but don't make a daily habit of it which you already said you wouldn't be doing anyway so i don't see any harm in it.0 -

of differing opinions here....that would tell me that I need more information.....just because a "nutritionist" says it is ok would not be good enough for me.....
I had reconstructive surgery on my shoulder and eventually found myself with "physical therapist" who quickly proceeded to have me work my shoulder so hard that I tore open the repair and had to have three more surgeries as a result...the therpaist was licensed and insured...so qualifcations mean something but not everything...crash diets can be dangerous and are usually for the short term0 -

Your nutritionist shouldn't be practicing. Anything under 1200 calories for a women is not healthy ... not only will it throw your body into strarvation mode but it will also do damage to your orgins.
Also, losing 10lbs in 10 days is NOT healthy. You are suppose to lose 0.5-2lbs a week ...
Why is it that people will do ANYTHING to lose weight ...even if it means hurting themselves greatly??0 -
So, what are you going to do after the 10 days when you gain 8 back by replenishing your lost glycogen and water? :huh: I can drop 10 lbs in less than 10 days, but that requires no carbohydrates and little water, and that's not fat loss anyway.0

The most important word in either phrase is "healthy".
There's all kinds of ways to weight loss. And starvation, eating disorders are not healthy weight loss. Yeah, you'll lose weight. And, you'll also lose your health.

Yes, we all understand your rush to gain back your prepregnancy body. We all too want to instantly weight at our goal weight. No one of us on MFP do not want to be instantly, snap our fingers an be there too. Yet, I hope most of us know that healthy weight loss is about a lifetime of creating new habits, new healthy eating choices, moderate our portions and not overindulge, moving more, building muscle, increasing stamina, strength, flexibility, and overall health as a result.
We all want you not to be starving hungry. Just because she is a nutritionist does not make what she says is right. After all, a scientist many years ago told all the earth is flat. He was wrong. And so is your nutritionist.
Listen to your inner voice. Hear it. Hear its hunger for food. For proper nutrition, for proper amounts. Your body is starving. Don't starve it. Feed it. Feed it with the right proper amts of food.
I truly believe that by your typing the original post that you already know what is the right answer. It was more a call for compassion to regain your prepregnancy body. We all know being a new mom is not easy, the sleep deprivation, always concerned for the health of your baby, many changes and stresses. Yet, not eating enough, starving yourself, would make your life much more difficult.
